Little Fish Comic Book Studio was founded in 2012 by Alonso Nunez with Patrick Yurick, and Alonso Nunez serves as founder and executive director. The studio operates as an educational nonprofit corporation and states a mission of developing an appreciation of the comic art form through classes and camps for students of all ages and creeds, while using community partnerships and local events to impact public education about comics. It emphasizes three main areas of inquiry: the study of comic art forms throughout human history, the study of how comics are thriving in markets today, and participation in dialogue about how comics may change and adapt in the future, including going to comic conventions, studying and embracing new comics technologies, and interacting with local, national, and international comic salespeople.
Little Fish Comic Book Studio states that materials are included in the cost of Kidz Comic Camps and Teenz Comic Camps. The Comic Con Artist Intensive includes onsite participation at San Diego Comic Con International, curated attendance of selected Comic-Con panels, portfolio reviews, and interviews and meetings with comic professionals, and it requires applicants to email a portfolio of five pieces of work, three of which are comic or manga sequential pages. The Little Fish Comic Industry Intensive explores the comic industry and San Diego’s place in it and includes visits to comic-related locations along with figure drawing, demos, and tours.
The studio describes community involvement that includes community partnerships, local events, visits to San Diego State University’s Pop Culture Library, Now Or Never Comics, local art stores and other comic-based locations, and participation in comic conventions. Through the Kevin Workman Foundation, it brings comics art instruction to underprivileged, homeless, and at-risk children. The Little Fish Comic Savvy event is free, and pooches are welcome at these events. The DND n’ Comics class is described as perfect for DND beginners, has a minimum age of 13 years old, and may take more than four weeks to complete a cycle.
Parent and student testimonials describe Little Fish Comic Book Studio as a place to learn something new and fun without finals or grades, with instructors who love what they do and who motivate students to work on their comics. Other testimonials note positive results in writing and describe a learning environment that guides students through making comics and provides honest evaluation, crafted by Patrick and Alonso.
