• Schedule: Surf camp runs through August, with Summer Surf Camp Half Day, Full Day, and Multiple Day options
Open since 1962, PB Surf Shop is the oldest surf shop and school in San Diego and is described as San Diego’s original surf school and oldest surf shop. Pacific Beach Surf School teaches more than 3,500 men, women, boys, and girls how to surf each year. PB Surf Shop offers quality foam surfboards and bodyboards and a quiver of fiberglass surfboards for rent from Rusty Surfboards and Hank Warner, along with combo packages and bike rentals, and a retail shop with skateboards, surfboards, drinkware, photos, hats, hoodies, and T-shirts.
All PB Surf Shop instructors are certified Water Safety Specialists and are described as seasoned watermen and waterwomen with experience teaching surfers of all ages. Surf lessons and surf camps include CPR Certified Instructions, First Aid, and Water Safety. The program’s stated mission is that it is dedicated to safety and structured to provide a fun and enriching setting for youth, and that it builds the self-confidence necessary to develop into true water-women and men. PB Surf Shop has 5 Star Reviews on Tripadvisor, Google, and Yelp.
Each camper is given the “Pacific Beach Surf School Journal,” which is constructed by local surf author and ambassador Glenn Hening. The journal is described as being packed with useful information for any surfer and includes activities where campers can write down their surfing goals and reflect on their experience. Campers are fully immersed in ocean safety, the surfer’s code, and surfing, and can finish with extensive surfing and water safety knowledge and return home as junior oceanographers and surf historians.
PB Surf Shop has supported many charity events over the years, including charity events with the Windansea Surf Club, and has supported Surfrider local volunteers. Randy Strunk is the owner and has had 30 years of ownership, and PB Surf Shop and Pacific Beach Surf School have been in business for more than 60 years.
Testimonials describe PB Surf Shop as having unparalleled service over the past decade for corporate clients, and mention longstanding business relationships of over ten years. Several community and business leaders note Randy Strunk’s support of charity events, his personal commitment and support of Surfrider local volunteers, and his leadership, expertise, and management as a template for community-relevant surf retail shops. Other testimonials describe his balance between business needs and civic responsibility, his high level of integrity, and years dedicated to teaching others about the sport and the importance of safety and procedures. A former PB Surf School student, age 10, specifically mentions learning a lot and describes his trainer as a very kind, loving coach and looks forward to returning to gain more skills.
