San Diego Beach Rides at Pony Land is a family owned and operated business in Southern San Diego County that specializes in large events and event rentals, including Clydesdales that can pull wagons with up to 18 passengers and custom wagons for many occasions. Pony rides are specially designed for nervous, first-time riders, consist of three laps around a corral with an experienced guide, and are available for children under 6 years old who weigh less than 70 pounds. The petting zoo includes bunnies, a mini cow, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and some exotic animals. The program offers San Diego’s premier trail horseback riding, including a riverbed ride through a little known area with fragrant, lush greenery and occasional wildlife viewings, and access to the only beach in San Diego where a horse can be ridden, with beach rides subject to State Park closure and requiring a call for availability. No experience is necessary for rides.
The ranch offers full service boarding with feedings twice per day of alfalfa or bermuda, automatic waterers, stall cleaning 6 days per week, an on-site manager, and use of an arena and round pen, along with direct trail access to the Tijuana River Valley Trail System. The business provides white horse rentals for weddings and specializes in traditional Indian Barat weddings with richly detailed gold and red accessories.
San Diego Beach Rides at Pony Land was founded by Dan Winne and is now run by his son Garret and Garret’s wife Jessica, and the name was changed from Happy Trails to San Diego Beach Rides at Pony Land after Dan Winne’s passing. In 2016, the Winne family welcomed their son DJ.
Parent reviews describe horseback riding on the beach, guides who explain the ride and are conversational and friendly, and horses that are described as beautiful, well behaved, and well cared for. One testimonial notes seeing the border of Tijuana, Mexico during the beach ride, and another mentions that making a reservation over the phone went smoothly and was easy to book.
