Musical Theatre Works opened its doors in 1997, and 2022 marked its 25th anniversary. The program offers professional Broadway experiences for young actors in San Francisco, with year-round options including after-school classes, summer programs, and Main Stage productions. Students from kindergarten to 12th grade come to Musical Theatre Works to sing, dance, and act on stage under the guidance of professional theatre artists, with comprehensive training in singing, dancing, and acting techniques and an ensemble mindset with a focus on collaboration and support. Main Stage Production actors in grades 5–9 produce two full-length Broadway musicals per year, one in the fall semester and one in the spring, and the Main Stage program relies heavily on the help and support of parent volunteers for tech rehearsals and performances. Summer immersion programs are also offered where students experience all aspects of musical theatre production and performance.

The organization was founded by Carolyn Miller. Christina Lazo serves as choreographer for “Grease” and Executive Artist Director. Meghan Crosby-Jolliffe, a singer, actor, community advocate and Teaching Artist, leads The Cabaret Company. Cabaret Company members act as Musical Theatre Works ambassadors in the greater community by performing in one or more local community events during the season.

A student testimonial describes the environment: “I love that everyone is so friendly and nice, so you can always make a friend.” - Libby, Age 12.
