Musical Theatre Works describes its mission as offering professional Broadway experiences for young actors in San Francisco. Students from kindergarten to 12th grade participate under the guidance of professional theatre artists in year-round options that include after-school classes, summer programs, and main stage productions. The Main Stage program is an after-school program for actors in grades 5–9 that follows structured phases of preparation, auditions, rehearsals, and performance, and everyone is cast in a role. Main Stage actors in grades 5–9 produce two full-length Broadway musicals per year, one in the fall semester and one in the spring, and the 2026 Fall Show is “High School Musical.” The Main Stage program relies heavily on parent volunteers for tech rehearsals and performances.
Musical Theatre Works opened its doors in 1997 and is described as having 29 years of Broadway magic. In 2001, Christina Lazo joined the team, and in 2007, with the production “Aida,” the company found its current theatrical home performing at the Randall Museum Auditorium. In 2022, Musical Theatre Works celebrated 25 years of transforming young lives through musical theater. The leadership team includes founder Carolyn Miller, Executive Artist Director Christina Lazo, and Meghan Crosby-Jolliffe, who is described as a singer, actor, community advocate, Teaching Artist extraordinaire, and the leader of the Cabaret Company.
The Cabaret Company members act as ambassadors in the greater community by performing in one or more local community events during the season. One student, Libby, age 12, states, “I love that everyone is so friendly and nice, so you can always make a friend.”
