About
San Francisco Police Activities League (SFPAL) Youth Programs offers activities including football, flag football, cheerleading, dance, girls basketball, boys basketball, law enforcement cadets, jiu jitsu, fishing, chess, art, and CrossFit. The SFPAL 49ers football program has played at Kimbell Field in the Western Addition for more than sixty years and serves more than 50 young boys and girls every fall. Space for SFPAL 49ers football is limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: SFPAL 49ers football season runs from July 27 through November, with registration from February 1 to August 31; football practices for the 2026 season begin Monday, July 27, 2026, and are held Monday–Thursday from 5:00–7:00 pm, then shift the week after Labor Day to Wednesday–Friday from 5:00–7:00 pm; office hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–4:00 pm.
• Price: SFPAL 49ers football has free registration with a $300 uniform deposit paid via PayPal; girls basketball is free; boys basketball is free; jiu jitsu is free; Sgt. Herbert Lee Fishing is free; chess is free; art is free; CrossFit is free; Law Enforcement Cadets costs 450.
Since 1959, thousands of San Francisco youth have participated in PAL activities, and thousands of SFPAL youth have grown into leaders within the City of San Francisco, the San Francisco Police Department, and the business and nonprofit community. Fifty-five years ago, two policemen started what has grown into the San Francisco Police Activities League, which now serves almost 1,200 youth annually with the help of over 100 civilian and police volunteer coaches and mentors, many of whom are PAL alumni. SFPAL states that it builds community by organizing youth sports and healthy activities and that it develops personal character and fosters positive relationships among police officers, youth, and dedicated volunteers. SFPAL is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, is an independent nonprofit organization, and receives no funding from the City and County of San Francisco.
SFPAL 49ers is associated with the Bay Area Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer. SFPAL 49ers PREP flag football is brought by the San Francisco 49ers Foundation in partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park’s Department. SFPAL 49ers Football is partnered with the San Francisco 49ers and associated with Peninsula Pop Warner and Pop Warner Nationals, and SFPAL 49ers Cheerleading is also partnered with the San Francisco 49ers and associated with Peninsula Pop Warner and Pop Warner Nationals. Girls and boys basketball are in partnership with the Academy of Art University, which also sponsors the art program. The Fisherman’s Wharf Merchants Association, Wipe Out Bar & Grill, Alcatraz Cruises LLC., Pier 39, Blue & Gold Fleet, and the Port of San Francisco sponsor the SFPAL Fishing Program. The Archdiocese of San Francisco sponsors the SFPAL Chess Program, and CrossFit Potrero Hill sponsors the CrossFit program.
For SFPAL 49ers football registration, required items are a copy of the child’s birth certificate, a copy of the child’s complete report card (not required for the 2026 season), and a $300 uniform deposit paid via PayPal, and all required forms must be submitted to be considered fully registered.
