• Ages: 7–16 years old
• Schedule: One to three week summer camp sessions; three to four day Family Camp weekends; three to four day Adult Retreat weekends; two-year B*Mitzvah program
Camp Tawonga Summer Programs take place in a screen-free environment and use all-gender cabins with inclusion for all campers. The property includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a lake with a mini island, access to multiple swimming holes and beaches along the Tuolumne River, a Challenge Course boasting 17 elements situated among the trees, an expansive organic garden, a Garden Kitchen, a farm with goats and chickens whose milk and eggs are used to make treats, an Arts & Crafts facility, an archery range, a ga-ga court, a full basketball court, a sports field, camper cabins with spacious decks for bunk-wide stargazing made of Tawonga-milled cedar wood, a Dining Hall updated and expanded in 2019, the outdoor sanctuary Makom Shalom, and a Health Center with an upstairs clinic, patient exam spaces, patient recovery rooms and isolation areas. A medical doctor is always on duty during the summer.
Camp Tawonga has served as a leader in Jewish camping for 100 years and was established in 1925, first located in Lake Tahoe and moving to its current Tuolumne River location in 1964. The organization runs programming for children, families, and adults both at its residential campsite and in the San Francisco Bay Area, including “Down the Mountain” programs such as Jewish holiday celebrations, Tot Shabbats and volunteer service outings. Its mission states that immersing children in community building, Jewish values and nature helps them become their best selves, and that they use the experience of Tawonga to make the world a better place. Unique features include a Jewish camping focus, adventure “Quests” offering wilderness explorations on the road, a Teen Leadership Institute, Specialist and Counselor-In-Training programs, a B*Mitzvah two-year program, property owned outright by Camp Tawonga, the Makom Shalom outdoor sanctuary, and the Garden Kitchen for cooking from scratch using seasonal ingredients.
One testimonial describes that even when indoors at Camp Tawonga, it feels like being in the wilderness, with rustic cabins surrounded by trees and the chance to unplug and immerse in nature, and calls Tawonga a “happy place.”
