Since 2011, the Elevate Tutoring Fellowship Program has been accelerating social mobility for low-income, first-generation college students and underserved K–12 students. The program’s mission is to advance social justice by bridging economic and achievement gaps on the path to and through college. It provides training, work experience, career development, professional development, and scholarships to low-income, first-generation college students, who in turn provide high-quality STEM tutoring, mentorship, and growth mindset coaching to younger K–12 peers. The program provides more than 4,000 hours per year of free STEM tutoring to underserved schools and has supported over 350 Tutor Fellows, with more than $1,634,300 in fellowship funds earned, over 17,180 hours of professional development provided, and more than 35,000 hours of free tutoring delivered. Elevate Tutoring states that educational disparities are the result of years of underinvestment rather than intrinsic aptitude and uses high-quality, representation-focused tutoring and authentic human connections to support students at different stages of learning. The organization focuses on finding people to tutor, mentor, and act as role models for the next generation and states that volunteerism promotes social consciousness, a sense of purpose, and self-confidence, and that serving others supports individuals, the community, and the person who serves.
