About

SCUSD Preschool Programs include daily activities such as physical activity, active play and movement, art, music, movement, dialogue, and interactive storytelling. Children take part in project based and inquiry focused opportunities, as well as small-group lessons, large-group time, planning time, and work time. Large-group time includes movement and music activities, interactive storytelling, and other shared experiences, and children are encouraged to make choices, decisions, initiate their own activities, and sometimes play the role of leader.

• Ages: 2–4 years old
• Schedule: Full and part day schedules available Monday to Friday, with 10- and 12-month program options; hours of operation vary by site

The programs emphasize kindergarten readiness skills, social and emotional development, and physical and creative development in an active participatory learning environment. Content areas include Social and Emotional Development, Language and Literacy Development, English Language Development, Cognition-Math and Science, Physical Development–Health and Nutrition, and Music and Movement. Cognitive and language skills are supported through experimentation, inquiry, observation, play and exploration, art, music, movement, dialogue, and by promoting interaction and language use among children and between children and adults, as well as supporting emerging literacy and numeracy development. Social and emotional development is supported by building trust, planning routines and transitions so they occur in a predictable and unhurried manner, and helping children develop emotional security and facility in social relationships. Physical development is supported by promoting physical activity, providing sufficient time to move within indoor and outdoor spaces, and providing equipment, materials, and guidelines for active play and movement.

The preschool programs are currently rated at the highest tiers, platinum and gold, in the “Quality Matters... A Strong Start for Kids” Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS). Programs are assessed based on Child Observation, Developmental and Health Screening, Effective Teacher-Child Interactions, Ratios and Group Size, Environment, and Staff Training and Education. Adult to child ratios are based on age groups and follow Title 5 and Title 22 regulations. The programs use the Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) model of intensive language development and the High Scope Curriculum approach with active participatory learning. Children have the opportunity to learn individually and in small and large groups. All families must submit an interest application and will be contacted when a space becomes available. Tuition assistance is available at the Bowers, Bracher, Briarwood, Hughes, Mayne, Montague, and Scott Lane Elementary School preschool programs.
