Agnew Elementary School, 3534 Zanker Rd, San Jose, CA 95134
About
SCUSD Preschool Programs include daily experiences such as physical activity, active play and movement, art, music, movement, dialogue, interactive storytelling, and both project based and inquiry focused opportunities. Children participate in small-group lessons, large-group time, planning time, and work time, and large-group time includes up to 20 children with two adults. Children learn through active hands-on, play based, project based, and inquiry focused activities that engage their world.
• Ages: 2–4 years old
• Schedule: Full and part day options Monday to Friday, with ten- or twelve-month programs during the year
The programs emphasize kindergarten readiness skills, social and emotional development, and physical and creative development in an active participatory learning environment. Content areas include Social and Emotional Development, Language and Literacy Development, English Language Development, Cognition-Math & Science, Physical Development–Health & Nutrition, and Music & Movement. Cognitive and language skills are supported through experimentation, inquiry, observation, play and exploration, creative self-expression, interaction and language use among children and adults, and support for emerging literacy and numeracy development. Social and emotional development is supported through building trust, planning routines and transitions so they occur in a predictable and unhurried way, and supporting emotional security and social relationships. Physical development is supported by promoting physical activity, providing time to move in indoor and outdoor spaces, and offering equipment, materials, and guidelines for active play and movement.
SCUSD Preschool Programs use the High Scope Curriculum approach with active participatory learning and the Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) model of intensive language development. Children have chances to learn individually and in small and large groups, and adult-to-child ratios are based on age groups and follow Title 5 and 22 regulations. All families must submit an interest application and are contacted when a space becomes available, and tuition assistance is available at several sites.
The preschool programs are currently rated at the highest tiers, platinum and gold, in the “Quality Matters... A Strong Start for kids” Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS). Programs are assessed based on Child Observation, Developmental and Health Screening, Effective Teacher-Child Interactions, Ratios and Group Size, Environment, and Staff Training and Education. The programs are part of the “Quality Matters... A Strong Start for kids” initiative, which identifies high quality early learning preschool programs in California.
