About the provider
Second Start Learning Disabilities Programs was founded in 1974. Special needs education in grades 1-12 began in 1976 at Pine Hill School, classes for adults were added in July 1988, Advent Academy started in 2002, Newton Learning Center launched in 2003, and Newton Learning Center Northern Nevada was founded in 2007. The program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Pine Hill School received School of Excellence from The National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET). Its mission is to empower students with special needs, and its vision is to educate and inspire students to master the social and academic fundamentals needed to achieve a fulfilling and productive life.
Second Start aims to return students to regular classroom settings within two years of entering. It strives for each student to advance 1.5 academic years for each academic year at Second Start. The source states an individualized, safe, and supportive education program and a safe and trusting atmosphere.
