West Valley Dance Company was founded in 1976, with its first dance class held on April 5, 1976, and by the late 1990s it had grown to over 800 students. From 1976 to 2009, more than 15,000 dancers passed through its studios, and in 2009 the West Valley Dance Cats team was created, eventually growing into West Valley Dance Company by 2015. The program’s history includes an annual recital at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown San Jose, an annual recital production of Peter Pan with a flying cast and three sold-out shows, and a shift to virtual classes and a virtual recital in 2020. In 2015, WVDC opened its first independent studio with boutique dance rooms, lounges, a dedicated space for competition teams, a lounge for rest and reflection, and a viewing area for parents, followed by the addition of ballroom dance classes in 2021 and an Acrobatic Arts program that includes Tiny Tumblers, Buddy & Me, and advanced Acro courses. The program grew from a single dance class at Action Day Schools, where each of the 11 locations had its own studio offering professional-level dance classes onsite, and it is described as a cornerstone of dance education in the Bay Area and a “home away from home” for dancers.

The mission of West Valley Dance Company is to provide a professional, inspiring dance education for all ages, rooted in passion, excellence, and community, with studios that celebrate each dancer, welcome families, and offer classes that foster creativity, growth, and lifelong skills. The program states that it offers a professional education that caters to individual pace and growth, with lessons that go beyond those of the dance studio and a purpose to inspire confidence, commitment, and creativity, building confidence, creativity, and community with every class. Its tuition uses a monthly structure designed to fit a variety of dance schedules and needs, averaged over the entire dance year, and it does not offer make-up classes or refunds for missed classes due to limited class sizes.
