About
EPIC – Engineering Possibilities in College is a one-week summer camp where participants take part in hands-on labs taught by university professors and industry professionals, design, build, and test their own engineering projects, and join live virtual and in-person engineering labs. Campers also make new friends, go hiking, swim, participate in field games, get to know the campus, and attend Speaker Series sessions on Cal Poly Admissions, industry speakers, college life, engineering majors, and engineering student panels. Social events include pool time, movie night, bowling, and hikes, and campers join tours of Cal Poly, the College of Engineering, and campus housing.
• Ages: 11–16 years old
• Schedule: EPIC is a one-week summer camp.
• Price: 2026 Registration Fee: Session 1 (June 28-July 2, 6th-8th Grade) $1,900; Session 2 (July 5-10, 9th-11th Grade) $2,100; Session 3 (July 12-17, 9th-11th Grade) $2,100; Session 4 (July 19-24, 9th-11th Grade) $2,100. EPIC – Engineering Possibilities in College shares Cal Poly’s College of Engineering mission “to educate students for careers of service, leadership, and distinction in engineering or other fields by using a Learn by Doing, hands-on approach.” As one of the College of Engineering’s outreach programs, EPIC aims to facilitate a participant’s exploration of engineering fields and build a community of like-minded individuals. The camp introduces participants to varied fields of engineering through hands-on labs, and campers see Cal Poly students’ satellites, prosthetic hands, race cars, concrete canoes, and other products they have developed. Eligibility for EPIC 2026 is for students currently in grades 6–11, and each session is offered for either middle school or high school students. Sessions have been offered both residential and virtual, and EPIC has expanded to include up to six sessions accommodating over 800 participants.
Hands-on labs are taught by university professors and industry professionals. EPIC offers partial scholarships based on financial need, and there is no fee to apply; payment is submitted once the applicant is admitted. The application includes an essay of no longer than 250 words (1 page) on why the applicant would like to attend EPIC, and applicants do not need to submit a letter of recommendation or transcripts. All payments must be made online using a credit card, and checks are not accepted. The registration fee includes housing, all meals and snacks, engineering classes, all activities, an engineering week group project, the speaker series, social events, tours, and an EPIC camp t-shirt, cinch bag, and lanyard. EPIC is not able to provide transportation for participants; participants from outside San Luis Obispo County may choose to fly into the San Luis Obispo airport or use the Amtrak train, and parents or guardians are responsible for scheduling transportation to and from the program. EPIC-Engineering Possibilities in College summer camp began in 2007 with 20 middle and high school female students as a Cal Poly student half-day camp project.
