Aim High Summer is designed for current 5th–8th grade middle school students who have limited access to summer academic enrichment programs. It is a multi-summer learning experience in which students are expected to attend consecutive summers throughout middle school, beginning in 5th grade through 8th grade. The program uses restorative practices to prevent and respond to conflict, harm, and wrongdoing, and behavior expectations and interventions are rooted in these restorative practices. Aim High’s CORE values are Community, Opportunity, Respect, and High Expectations. The Issues & Choices class provides age-appropriate lessons and activities to explore identity, develop social emotional skills, and create plans for the future. The STEM class encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity through designing and building projects that solve real-world problems. The Humanities class encourages students to read, write, think about, and discuss contemporary issues to develop communication and literacy skills. Aim High is not equipped with a full SPED department at summer program locations and is unable to provide 1:1 full day support for students.
An Aim High parent described the program as a lifeline as a working parent, and reported feeling confident that their child experienced both fun and learning. This parent noted that communication has been easy, program offerings have been great, and their child enjoys the instructors. The parent also shared that the program gave their child a taste of middle school transitions between classes, different kinds of enrichment opportunities, new sports, and mentorship.
