Ed Hernandez Karate

Ed Hernandez Karate offers karate lessons that include Kempo Karate, kata (forms), kumite (sparring), and self defense. Classes take place at a karate school called Ed Hernandez Karate.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday through Saturday, with weekday classes between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm and Saturday classes between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm
• Price: $120.00 Dollars for August uniform included.

The school offers specific class times by age and level, including a 4:00 pm mixed class for ages 11–14, a 5:00 pm class for children 5–7, a 6:00 pm class for children 8–10, a 7:00 pm intermediate class for ages 11–13, and an 8:00 pm advanced class for ages 12–16. The mission statement for Ed Hernandez Karate states that the school has classes for children, teens, and adults and focuses on safety, fitness, and basic stances, blocks, and strikes. The program has a Back to School promotion, with a uniform included in the August promotion, and notes that there are no contracts and “Se habla espanol.”

Instructor Ed, also called The Professor, is an 8th Degree Black Belt in Kempo Karate and is a Certified Referee / Judge for the Bay Area Sport Karate Gold Cup Circuit. His background includes being on the Richmond High School wrestling team from 1973–1977, serving in the U.S. Army from 1977–1996, attending Lawton College in 1988–1989, and the Military Police Academy from 1989–1992, as well as participation in Desert Storm and the L.A. Riots. His martial arts experience includes martial art practice from 1979–1989, Kempo Karate from 1982–2006, and competition from 1986–2020. The school opened on August 10, 1998, and Ed has been the founder of Ed Hernandez Karate in San Pablo from 1998–2026, after assistant roles in Benicia from 1986–1988 and Richmond from 1988–1998.
