About
MallRat Camp offers a full day of activities that include gymnastics, skating, arcade time, movies, time in a bouncy house, and open gym. Campers spend time at Flying Dutchman Gymnastics for open gym, visit SkateEscape for skating, go to Haze's Toystore for arcade time, and Jump City for the bouncy house. The daily schedule includes open gym, snack, skating, lunch, arcade, bouncy house, and a final open gym period before pickup at 3:30 pm.
• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Daily camp schedule from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
• Price: Day Pass: $160/day, $600/week (after June 1st). Day Passes: buy 4 days in the same week, get the 5th free.
Flying Dutchman Gymnastics, which runs MallRat Camp, states a mission to provide quality gymnastics and to repurpose Northgate Mall to serve the community. The program notes that no additional money is required for activities because the day pass includes an open gym pass, skate rental, arcade money, and a Jump City pass. Families are asked to send shoes, socks (with a $10 charge listed for skating), a water bottle, and a snack and lunch large enough for a full day of movement. A parent portal account is used to view and enroll in programming, birthday parties, and camps, and all closures and school vacations are pro-rated, with the option to unenroll anytime via the online portal with 30 days prior notice. The program emphasizes recreational rather than competitive gymnastics and states a belief that the greatest competition is yourself and that every child should experience a positive team atmosphere.
MallRat Camp is led by Flying Dutchman Gymnastics co-founder, owner, and head coach Carrie Kelman and is part of the program founded by Olympic qualifying gymnast and Master Clinician Dirk Ooijkaas. Dirk started competing in gymnastics in 1967, joined the junior national team at age 11, and became National Champion by age 15. He qualified for the 1975 European Championships in Bern, advanced to the 1978 World Championships in Strasbourg, and competed at the World Championships in Fort Worth, Texas the following year. Dirk was invited to the United States in 1988 under his Master Clinician status, founded San Francisco Gymnastics in 2001, and founded Flying Dutchman Gymnastics in 2015; he passed away in January 2024 from stage 4 adenocarcinoma. Carrie co-founded Flying Dutchman Gymnastics in 2013, holds a USAGymnastics professional certification, and is certified in safety and risk management, USA Gymnastics Fitness, Sport Science, preschool fundamentals, and acrobatic gymnastics. Flying Dutchman Gymnastics is locally owned and states a focus on using shopping centers like Northgate to provide value and support to local families through programming and activities.
