School of Rock was founded as a single school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1998 and has grown to over 385 locations in 16 different countries, with more than 65,000 students worldwide. Its mission is to be a growing and passionate community dedicated to enriching lives through performance-based music education. School of Rock San Rafael offers several distinct options, including the Rock 101 program for beginners ages 8–13, the Performance Program for ages 8–18, the Rookies program for ages 6–7 with no prior musical experience needed, an Adult Program for students over 18 years old, and a House Band program for students under 18 to join a gigging band. The school uses a patented School of Rock Method music education system and combines one-on-one instruction with group rehearsals.
School of Rock San Rafael students perform at local venues like Sweetwater Music Hall and at community-based events including the Marin County Fair, and Performance Program and Adult Program students play at local San Rafael music venues and real rock venues in San Rafael. House Band members perform live shows at California rock venues throughout the year. School of Rock San Rafael serves kids and adults across San Rafael and surrounding areas like Novato, Mill Valley, and Corte Madera, and is an after-school destination for students in the San Rafael City Schools, including those from Mary E. Silveira Elementary School and Miller Creek Middle School.
The leadership team for School of Rock includes Stacey Ryan, President; Sam Dresser, Chief Innovation Officer; Demi Iskandar, Vice President of Marketing; Eric Schmidt, Vice President of Information Technology; and Molly Simms, Vice President of Operational Standards. School of Rock has been recognized with several honors, including being named Global Franchise Grand Champion at the 2026 Global Franchise Awards and inclusion in the 2026 Top 100 Global Franchises for School of Rock and Youth Enrichment Brands. An independent study of 1,443 parents of School of Rock students under age 18, administered from 4/26–5/7/2025, found that after joining programs, 96.2% of parents saw a boost in their child’s self-confidence and 95.9% reported improved teamwork skills; these results reflect self-reported experience and are for informational purposes only.
Parents have shared feedback such as, “What I like about the program is that my kids LOVE it! This is so different from the music lessons that existed when I was a kid. These kids are actually making music and learning to play as a band. The performances are so impressive, and watching the kids gain confidence and express themselves on stage is priceless,” from Yessim P, a School of Rock parent. Other parents, including Lori H from Downington, PA, Chevelle S from Portland, OR, and Dustie S from Austin, TX, describe their children learning to play, being part of a band, and experiencing a structured approach to how kids learn, with comments about communication, respect, accountability, and a vibrant atmosphere.
