Marin Girls Chorus is a nonprofit youth chorus that offers choral programs for girls in grades K–12, with six levels of instruction that provide musical training for a range of ages and abilities. The program includes Young Singers (grades K–2), a Training Division (grades 2–6), a Concert Division (grades 6–12), Pop Chorus, summer offerings, and an online academy. Anyone who identifies as a girl can join, and boys who are interested in choral training are invited to join the San Francisco Boys Chorus. Marin Girls Chorus is not a religious chorus but includes sacred music as part of a comprehensive repertoire. SummerSings Camp weeks culminate in a Showcase Performance for families on Friday at 2:00 pm, and Singer’s Workshop concludes with a performance at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 31; no experience is necessary to participate in Singer’s Workshop. The mission of Marin Girls Chorus is to empower girls through exceptional music education and the joy of collaborative singing by creating an inclusive environment with a stage for singers to build confidence, community, and a strong sense of self.

The organization’s leadership includes an Artistic Director, Training Division Director, Business Director, and Founder, along with a Board of Directors and an Advisory Board. Artistic Director Cole Thomason-Redus is a two-time GRAMMY Award winning choral artist with twenty-four years of experience teaching music to young minds, experience with ensembles such as the San Francisco Boys Chorus and Chanticleer, and work as a choral composer whose pieces have been performed internationally, including by Cantus and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. He has held roles at iTunes and Apple Music as Curator of Classical Music, worked as a classical musicologist for Pandora’s Music Genome Project, is on staff at the National Children’s Chorus, and develops educational content and programming for the Department of Diversity, Equity and Community at San Francisco Opera. Training Division Director Denise Wharmby began as a chorister at age seven, toured England and Wales for international choral competitions at age twelve, sang a concert in Westminster Abbey, worked as a professional performer in musical theatre and classical vocal repertoire, consulted and wrote songs for the BBC schools program “Music Makers,” taught grades K–12 in Marin schools, served as music director of high school musicals at San Domenico for twelve consecutive years, and has written original songs for children. Business Director Gretchen Hopkins studied cello and voice in college, has sung in professional and community choruses, led choir, drama, and other arts-focused groups for children, holds an MFA in writing from the University of San Francisco, and has worked as a journalist, publications director, and editor. Founder Martha Wall received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of California at Berkeley, a Masters in Music Education from Holy Names College in Oakland with emphasis on the Kodály approach to children’s music education, has taught and directed music in Marin County since 1980, served as Associate Director for Consort Chorale for over fifteen years, was Director of Music for First Presbyterian Church, San Anselmo for seven years, sings with the Marin Symphony Chorus, and teaches private piano lessons.

Marin Girls Chorus has a dress code that includes informal and formal concert uniforms by level. All students’ informal uniform consists of a purple shirt provided by Marin Girls Chorus worn with jeans, pants, or a dark skirt, with hair pulled away from the face; the Concert Division informal uniform also includes a dark gray MGC-branded hoodie. Formal dress options include chorus-provided navy blue or black dresses or a black tunic and pants for specific ensembles, with black tights or flats and hair pulled back from the face. A chorus-provided gender-neutral shirt and pants combination is permissible for all students in lieu of a concert dress when arranged in advance with the Business Director or the student’s instructor.
