The American Association of University Women (AAUW) runs Tech Trek as part of its mission to empower women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. AAUW is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization. Tech Trek is a science and math camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall, with camp curriculum targeted specifically at girls entering 8th grade. All girls attend Tech Trek camps on scholarships provided by AAUW California branch members, working with participating junior highs and middle schools in their area. Seventh grade science and/or math teachers at participating schools recommend camper candidates, who go through an application, essay, and personal interview. The Santa Barbara–Goleta Valley branch has been very involved in Tech Trek since its inception in 1998 and has been responsible for organizing the Career Night speakers for the UCSB Tech Trek camp since it began. Branch members volunteer as dorm moms and help with registration, and every year the branch invites the camp staff to a kick-off dinner the night before the first day of camp. The Santa Barbara–Goleta Valley branch sent 22 girls to Tech Trek in 2023 and encourages local young women to consider STEM careers by sending them to this summer science and math camp for junior high girls. This involvement has been supported by branch members, individuals in the community, and contributions and grants from local businesses, foundations, and service clubs. Every year in early fall, campers report back on their experiences at an Ice Cream Social to which branch members and community supporters are invited, and the branch sponsors local community forums and action projects.
