Lobero Theatre Youth Programs include jazz music education that takes place both in classrooms and on stage. Students take part in hands-on jazz education and in-class instruction in jazz music, and some perform live on the Lobero stage with state-of-the-art light and sound. The programs also feature an on-stage performance by the Douget Band that includes some student residency participants.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: The Journey Through Jazz residency includes seven weeks of in-class instruction, and the Brubeck Circle Jazz Residency is a one-week residency.
• Price: Through the John C. Mithun Foundation Community Access Fund, more than $100,000 worth of subsidies are provided to local performing arts and youth performance organizations that perform on the Lobero stage.
The Journey Through Jazz residency provides hands-on jazz education to local 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, and includes a live student performance on the Lobero stage. The Brubeck Circle Jazz Residency brings New Orleans jazz educator Derek Douget and his band to work directly in classrooms with middle school, high school, and college students studying jazz music, serving more than 300 students in 10 schools and after-school programs and ending with an on-stage performance by the Douget Band featuring some student residency participants. The Lobero partners with local music educators and social service agencies to reach hundreds of deserving participants, and provides qualifying students, families, and seniors with the chance to experience live performances at the Lobero Theatre free of charge.
Obtaining funds for Lobero’s Youth and Community Outreach programs is described as essential to achieving a dream of a community where art, creativity, and education are typical values and resources. The Lobero is California’s only historic performing arts venue that is Green Business Certified, and it uses compostable cups, napkins, and utensils for receptions and concessions events, provides artist meal service on real dishes, supplies performers with reusable stainless steel water bottles, uses filtered water and water refill stations, and has switched to wine and beer kegs at concession stands. The theater sells Klean Kanteen souvenir pint cups with refills at a reduced price, has updated its stage lighting system to energy-efficient LEDs where possible, and has installed solar panels on the Gail Towbes Auditorium rooftop that add excess solar power to the local power grid.
