About

OG Readers tutoring program offers one-to-one tutoring that includes reading, writing, and spelling. Each meeting follows a structured lesson that includes decoding and/or phonograms, sight word reading, a new concept for the lesson, alphabet knowledge, spelling, dictation, and oral reading. Lesson plans are created around each child’s current reading ability and specific needs, and students can join a waitlist for a reading assessment and possible match with a tutor.

• Ages: 6–10 years old
• Schedule: Students meet with their tutor for one hour each week.
• Price: OG Readers tutoring program is a free one-to-one tutoring service.

OG Readers tutoring program is offered by Santa Barbara Public Library. Tutors are trained volunteers who have completed background checks and use the Orton-Gillingham highly structured, multi-sensory, phonics-based approach, which was initially developed for readers with dyslexia. The program is for students in Grades 1–4 who struggle with reading and reading comprehension, including English-Language Learners. Tutors use sight, hearing, and movement to help students connect language with letters and words, and the curriculum teaches the sounds of the English language and their corresponding symbols, spelling rules and generalizations, and syllable types. The program uses a specific order of introduction of reading skills based on how language is learned.
