Airborne Gymnastics has been a female, family-owned business since 1994, serving the Santa Clara community for almost 30 years. The program is owned by Melanie Ruggiero and Leah Tanquary, who both discovered a love for competitive gymnastics at a young age. Both owners graduated from San José State University, and Melanie competed as a Spartan on the NCAA gymnastics team. Airborne Gymnastics states that its goal is to nurture and create the desire in each child and young adult to be the best they can be when they walk into Airborne, and that its top priority is to provide a positive environment where the health and well-being of all children are at the forefront of what it does.
The program notes that it offers gymnastics and parkour programs for all ages and abilities, including a free infant (0–12 months) class and day camps for children ages 4 and up during school breaks. It offers kids birthday parties in a 25,000 sq. ft. facility and special make-up sessions for classes missed due to Airborne closures, along with Zoom make-up classes that are live and instructor-led. Airborne Gymnastics reports that, from little girls to adult women, it represents the largest number of NCAA scholarship athletes from any gym in Northern California and describes its facility as clean, safe, and state-of-the-art, with one of the most experienced groups of instructors in the Bay Area and owners who are present and accessible throughout the week.
Students are asked to come to every class dressed in comfortable sports or athletic attire such as a leotard, tank or t-shirt, shorts, or sweats or leggings, with no jeans or dresses allowed. Clothing with belts, buckles, large buttons, or zippers is not allowed because it can harm students and coaches and damage equipment. Hair must be secured back away from the face before class, jewelry should be removed before class with stud earrings accepted, and students must be barefoot on the gym floor, as socks are not permitted.
Parent and gymnast testimonials describe experiences with free infant classes, diaper dinos classes, recreational and competitive gymnastics, parkour, and birthday parties, as well as long-term participation from Mommy and Me classes through Level 10 competitive gymnastics and NCAA Division 1 athletic scholarships. Multiple parents and gymnasts mention friendly and helpful teachers and staff, supportive coaches, organized team programs, and communication from the office, and they refer to Airborne Gymnastics as having a family feel and being a significant part of their children’s lives.
