Airborne Gymnastics has been a female, family-owned business since 1994, serving the Santa Clara community for almost 30 years. The program offers gymnastics and parkour programs for all ages and abilities, with the ability to add additional programs for boys and parkour. Many staff members have been employed for 15–25 years, and both owners are present and accessible throughout the week.
Owners Melanie Ruggiero and Leah Tanquary both graduated from San José State University, and Melanie competed as a Spartan on the NCAA gymnastics team. At Airborne, the staff includes one of the most experienced groups of instructors in the Bay Area, and they provide a refined curriculum to inspire children in the community to be active while having fun. The program’s goal is to nurture and create the desire in each child and young adult to be the best they can be when they walk into Airborne, with a stated priority of keeping the health and well-being of all children at the forefront of what they do.
From little girls to adult women, Airborne represents the largest number of NCAA scholarship athletes from any gym in Northern California. One parent notes that Airborne has something for all levels and ages, from Mommy and Me classes to Level 10 competitive gymnastics, and describes the competitive program as top notch with excellent coaches and staff. Another parent shares that all three of their kids attend classes ranging from parkour to recreational and high-level competitive gymnastics, and that their eldest daughter, who trained at Airborne for 10 years, received an athletic scholarship to a Division 1 gymnastics college.
Parents and athletes describe the staff and environment in detail. One parent reports that their child has attended for over two years, looks forward to class every week, and that they hosted a birthday party there. Another parent describes starting in a free infant (0–12 month) class with Coach Rome, continuing into the Diaper Dinos class, and choosing Airborne over closer options because of the facility, affordability compared to smaller gyms, and the staff. A long-time gymnast describes Airborne as a second home and credits the staff and support group with impacting them inside and outside of the gym. Multiple parents mention specific coaches and owners by name, including Mel, Leah, Melissa, and Cleo, and describe long-term experiences that include Level 10 training, college recruitment, and what they call a family feel to the gym.
Students are expected to come to every class dressed in comfortable sports or athletic attire such as a leotard, tank or t-shirt, shorts, or sweats or leggings, with no jeans or dresses allowed. Clothing with belts, buckles, large buttons, or zippers is not allowed because it can harm students and coaches and damage equipment. Hair must be secured back away from the face before class, jewelry should be removed (with stud earrings accepted), and students must be barefoot on the gym floor, as socks are not permitted.
