• Ages: 5–18 years old
The Santa Clara Police Activities League (SCPAL) was founded by Former Chief of Police Frank Sapena in 1970 and has been in existence for over 48 years. SCPAL is a nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service. Competent community volunteers lead SCPAL programs. The organization’s stated goal is to bring police, neighborhood volunteers, and kids together in a positive setting and to provide sports activities at a low cost to all children. SCPAL is dedicated to teaching youth the values and rewards that can be accomplished through athletics, including self-determination, self-belief, goal-setting, teamwork, and respect for others.
SCPAL depends solely on donations from individuals and corporations, and the SCPAL Board of Directors holds many fund-raisers to help provide necessary equipment, uniforms, and insurance. Community events that benefit these programs include the 4th of July BBQ in Central Park Pavilion, the Annual SCPAL Golf Tournament, the PAL-GALs Girls Fast Pitch Softball Tournament, and the Art and Wine Festival at Central Park. PAL sponsored twelve local students on an SCPAL Fishing Trip attended by chaperones and students from SCPD, Wilcox, Santa Clara, and New Valley High Schools.
The leadership team includes CHIEF OF POLICE Cory Morgan; EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Officer David Machado; SCPAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT K. Mike Walke, VICE PRESIDENT Mary Ellen Stewart, TREASURER Dan Racimo, SECRETARY Ana Vargas Smith, and board members Brian Allen, John Boyles, Tim Frazier, Linda Leca, Fred Maguire, Daniel Meyberg, Kevin Moore, Christian Pellecchia, Cheryl Walsh, Kathy Watanabe, and Deana Wynne. HONORARY BOARD MEMBERS are John Elwood, Richard Rossi, and Larry Wolfe, and CITY COUNCIL MEMBER LIAISONS include Mayor Lisa Gillmor. The ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT is Victoria (Tori) Enos. SCPAL states that it does not receive funds from telephone marketing.
