• Ages: 1–6 years old
Santa Clara Parents Nursery School Programs operates as a play-based, parent-participation preschool using a cooperative, parent co-op model where parents are active partners. The program includes a Saturday Stay & Play program for ages 18 months to 3 years, a School Year program for ages 2–5 with flexible scheduling and co-op options, and Summer Programs for ages 2–6 that include themed camps and Wacky Wednesdays. Santa Clara Parents Nursery School is supported by a volunteer board made up of current parents and caregivers, and every family contributes. It is licensed by the State of California and is part of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools and its Silicon Valley chapter, SCVC.
Santa Clara Parents Nursery School has been a part of the community since 1956, when it was founded by a group of parents at Napredak Hall in Santa Clara. In 1957 it moved to Bethany Lutheran Church, in 1958 it moved into the building originally at 385 N. Monroe St., and in 1960 the building was relocated to its current site at 471 N. Monroe St. In 1973 and 1985, SCUSD granted additional land, expanding the outdoor play space by 45 feet, and in 2009 it became an independent, non-profit, parent-run nursery school licensed by the State of California.
The leadership team includes Sara as Director and Teacher; Odillia and Danyel as Lead Teachers; and Kaylin (President), Gema (Vice President), Carla (Secretary), Tracy (Membership), Annie (Committee), Kristen (Maintenance), and Joy (Publicity) on the volunteer board. Odillia holds degrees in Liberal Arts (Behavioral Science) and Human Services, has over 20 years of experience in early childhood education, and has been a preschool teacher since 2005.
Families describe the school as a place where they trust the teachers and participating families and share the same education philosophy, and where they have found support from other parents and grandparents who work in the school. Parents also report that the school has been an important support system during the toddler years, that the parent-participation model means the experience depends on the other families, and that they value the community and role-model expectations for parents.
