Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra states that its staff is made up of exceptional working teaching artists. The artistic director is Rachel Iba, who serves as SCVYO artistic director. The program’s mission statement is that it believes in the power of youth music education to inspire curious minds, promote personal growth, and nurture lifelong friendships. Each season, the orchestra partners with local visual artists, dancers, film-makers and others to create visually dynamic concert experiences that enrich the cultural life of the city. The organization describes itself as one of the most adventurous youth orchestra programs in the country, frequently programming contemporary, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary works alongside standard western classical orchestral repertoire. Its motto is “Come for the music, stay for the friendships!” Alumni have gone on to attend institutions such as Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Harvard, Northwestern, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, USC, and UCLA, among others. One testimonial from artistic director Rachel Iba says, “We are always looking to challenge our students to reflect on music with a more global lens, and consider how they can employ it to enrich their community.” Another testimonial from Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra says, “Come for the Music, Stay for the Friendships!”
