About
First Tee – Central Coast offers golf programs that include an introduction to junior golf, chances to enhance golf skills, and instruction in golf fundamentals and advanced techniques. Trained coaches lead the sessions and create a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for participants.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Programs run Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall in sessions that most often consist of an 8-week class meeting once per week, with some sites offering a camp format in the summer.
Central Coast Junior Golf, Inc. organized as a not-for-profit organization in September 1999 and began doing business as First Tee – Central Coast in October 2002. First Tee – Central Coast is one of 150 First Tee chapters across the U.S. and select international locations and is currently serving over 2,000 young people each year at thirteen central coast golf courses. The organization was created to bring the Life Skills Experience to communities in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and northern Ventura counties, and its school program reaches just under 30,000 students annually through PE classes in multiple local school districts. The First Tee Community Program offers a curriculum for after-school and youth-serving spaces such as YMCAs, Girls Inc, and Boys and Girls Club. Registration contact is Jessani Johnson. At First Tee – Central Coast, participants engage with the 5 Key Commitments: Pursuing Goals, Growing through Challenge, Collaborating with Others, Building Positive Self-Identity, and Using Good Judgement.
At First Tee – Central Coast, the stated mission is “Building Game Changers by empowering kids and teens to be the best version of themselves,” integrating the game of golf with character-building and learning experiences focused on inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience. A financial aid refund policy offers a refund minus a $10 administrative fee or a full credit for another session if contacted prior to the first class.
One alumnus, Claire Alford, shares that First Tee taught her values that guide her through challenges and opportunities, helped her build a supportive “go-to team,” and equipped her with confidence, perseverance, and leadership skills she plans to use in her future career as a physician, and she states that First Tee will always be part of her life.
