Central Coast Junior Golf, Inc. organized as a not-for-profit organization in September 1999 and began doing business as First Tee – Central Coast in October 2002. First Tee – Central Coast is one of 150 First Tee chapters across the U.S. and select international locations and currently serves over 2,000 young people each year at thirteen central coast golf courses. The school program reaches just under 30,000 students annually through the First Tee School Program, which brings its curriculum to elementary and middle school PE classes, and the First Tee Community Program, which is designed for after-school and youth-serving spaces such as YMCAs, Girls Inc, and Boys and Girls Club.
The organization was created to bring the Life Skills Experience to communities in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and northern Ventura counties. Participants engage with the 5 Key Commitments: Pursuing Goals, Growing through Challenge, Collaborating with Others, Building Positive Self-Identity, and Using Good Judgement. The mission of First Tee – Central Coast states that it is “Building Game Changers by empowering kids and teens to be the best version of themselves” and that by integrating the game of golf with character-building, it creates learning experiences that connect to inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience.
Registration contact for the program is listed as Jessani Johnson. One alumnus, Claire Alford, shares that First Tee – Central Coast taught her values that guide her through challenges and opportunities, helped her build a supportive “go-to team,” and equipped her with confidence, perseverance, and leadership skills she plans to use in her future career as a physician.
