Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit established in 1985 that is dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds in Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy, and clean, using science, education, community action, and advocacy. The organization’s leadership team includes Chief Executive Officer Tracy Quinn, Aquarium Director Marslaidh Ryan, Associate Director Aquarium, Education Kelly Kelly, Education Manager Robert Ramos, and Director of Science & Policy Kerry J. Nickols, along with additional operations, development, communications, aquarium, and science and policy staff. A Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program runs simultaneously with Winter Science Camp and Spring Science Camp for students who have aged out of camp, and CITs gain experience in hands-on outdoor field education, working with children, and increasing their overall ocean literacy. Camp scholarship applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and camp scholarships are available on a limited basis. CIT applications are accepted on a rolling basis with deadlines of December 5 for Winter Science Camp and March 13 for Spring Science Camp. Cancellations made prior to two weeks before the start of a registered camp session can be refunded, less a $50 administration fee, and cancellations within two weeks are non-refundable. Families are asked to download and fill out all Camp Forms before arriving at Science Camp.

Heal the Bay staff work to mobilize Los Angeles’ diverse communities to protect the coastline, restore waterways, and speak out for clean water policy across local watersheds, including through beach and neighborhood cleanups. Volunteers support ocean and freshwater areas in Los Angeles County, help ensure they are safe, optimize management of the local water supply, and take action for equitable access to clean water and green space. Thanks to the generosity of community partners, Heal the Bay has a limited number of camp scholarships available.

Education Manager Robert Ramos states, “I try to speak to [the campers] in a way that inspires them, that makes them want to care about the environment … it’s about caring about the place we exist in and inspire them to want to take care of it.”
