About
Heal the Bay Aquarium Science Camp includes hands-on activities such as Bird Detectives, Microscopic Animal Observation, Permeability Experiment, Animal Pelt Investigation, and an “Invisible Ink” Experiment. Campers take part in Beach Exploration + Cleanup, the “Find the Sea Serpent” game, Ocean Comic Craft, an Ocean Layers Experiment, Plankton Poetry, a Living Infrastructure Activity, and take-home crafts. The program also features “Sea”-cret Agent Ocean Explorers and Forts & Fish – The Quest for Conservation!, where campers step into the role of an oceanic secret agent with hands-on experiments, “undercover” field activities, and “top-secret” encounters with marine animals.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: “Sea”-cret Agent Ocean Explorers (Grades K–2) runs December 29 – January 2, excluding January 1; Forts & Fish – The Quest for Conservation! (Grades K–2) runs March 30 – April 3; after-camp care is offered from 2 PM–3 PM for $20 per day during Winter and Spring Science Camps
• Price: Winter Science Camp offers daily sessions à la carte for $85 per day or a full week for $330; Spring Science Camp offers daily sessions à la carte for $85 per day or a full week for $400; after-camp care is $20 per day
Camp kits and T-shirts are handed out on a camper’s final day of camp for those enrolled for several days and/or a full camp week during Winter and Spring Science Camps, and families are asked to download and fill out all camp forms before arriving. Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit established in 1985 that is dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds in Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy, and clean, using science, education, community action, and advocacy to fulfill its mission. The organization offers a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program that runs at the same time as Winter and Spring Science Camps for students who have aged out of camp, with rolling applications and stated deadlines of December 5 for Winter Science Camp and March 13 for Spring Science Camp. Thanks to community partners, a limited number of camp scholarships are available, with applications accepted on a rolling basis.
Heal the Bay’s leadership and staff include Chief Executive Officer Tracy Quinn, Associate Aquarium Director, Operations Laura Rink, Associate Director Aquarium, Education Kelly Kelly, Education Manager Robert Ramos, Public Programs Manager Micah Castrillo, Beach Programs Manager Tayler Locke, and other team members in operations, education, community programs, science, and policy. Education Manager Robert Ramos states, “I try to speak to [the campers] in a way that inspires them, that makes them want to care about the environment … it’s about caring about the place we exist in and inspire them to want to take care of it.”
