Santa Monica Academy of Music offers one-on-one and semi-private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, ukulele, and electric bass guitar. Students can also study music theory, composition, and participate in vocal groups such as the Academy Chorus and Academy Singers.
• Ages: 2–18 years old
• Schedule: Office hours Monday–Friday 2:00–7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., with teaching that can take place outside those hours
Since 1997, Santa Monica Academy of Music has provided a personalized environment that fosters the exploration and appreciation of many facets of music and offers a thorough and diverse music education with an emphasis on building fundamental skills. The program is celebrating its 27th year serving the Santa Monica and greater Los Angeles communities and works with students ranging from 4th through 12th grades. Conservatory- and university-trained instructors teach beginning and advanced students in multiple instruments and subjects.
The curriculum is aligned with the California Performing Arts Content Standards and features the Orff-Schulwerk process. Semi-private lessons for qualified students are funded by the Peggy Bergmann Arts Endowment Fund. Santa Monica Academy of Music serves families in Santa Monica, Brentwood, West LA, Pacific Palisades, Culver City, Venice, and the greater Los Angeles areas.
Santa Monica Academy of Music is an advocate for stronger, more comprehensive music programs in schools and partners with selected elementary schools to implement such programs. It provides or supplements music programs in local elementary schools, reaching over 1,000 students a week, and is part of the Begmann project in conjunction with the Santa Monica-Malibu School District's Education Foundation.
Parent and student testimonials describe teachers as patient, kind, friendly, and encouraging, and mention instruction in styles including classical, jazz, rock-and-roll, and beginning rock guitar.
