Art Classes at SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center include fine art workshops and classes in oil painting, acrylic painting, ceramics, wheel throwing, kurinuki, macramé, and printmaking with linoleum block printing. The program also offers paint & sip sessions, kids’ paint & sip, cardboard creations: mini rooms, ceramics open studio, and fine art open studio. Beginners are welcome in every class, and all materials are provided.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Options include one-day workshops, four consecutive Wednesdays, two Saturdays, four consecutive Fridays, six consecutive Saturdays (skipping July 4), and five consecutive Saturdays
• Price: Classes range from $40 for craft classes, $125–$165 for fine art classes, and up to $300 for ceramics courses; individual offerings include $42 for Printmaking: Linoleum Block Printing, $45 for Paint & Sip at Parque 1055, $280 for Oil Painting: Impressionist Mountains (six sessions), $200 for Acrylic Painting: Beachscapes (five sessions), $80 for One-Day Wheel Throwing Workshops, $200 for the 4-Day Intermediate Wheel Throwing Course, $120 for the 2-Day Kurinuki Course, $200 for the 4-Day Wheel Throwing Course, $56 for Macramé: Beach Tote, $40 for Kids’ Paint & Sip, $40 for Cardboard Creations: Mini Rooms, $70 for Ceramics Open Studio hand building, $90 for Ceramics Open Studio wheel throwing, and $80 for Fine Art Open Studio
Preregistration is required for listed classes and open studios, and participants are asked to preregister before arriving for Ceramics Open Studio. Open Studio sessions are uninstructed, and ceramics open studio participants must have previous studio experience or have completed two or more multi-day ceramics courses; Fine Art Open Studio is also uninstructed. Gift class credits can be purchased in any amount and used toward upcoming classes, and these credits are non-refundable, cannot be returned or exchanged for other goods or services, and cannot be redeemed for cash.
The Cole Creativity Center offers art classes and programs for children and adults, and it is located next door to the Santa Paula Art Museum, which occupies two renovated historic buildings. The Santa Paula Art Museum opened on February 14, 2010, and the Cole Creativity Center opened in the summer of 2018. The Museum’s mission is to preserve and share Santa Paula's artistic heritage, including the Santa Paula collection, and to educate and engage the community through collection, exhibition, interpretation, programming, and outreach.
Teaching artists associated with the program include Curator of Creativity Gabriel Islas, along with Nathanael Read, Jem Atwater, Dewey Ledbetter, Tara Weber, Connor Kelley, Jynell Dimalanta, Roxanne Casas, Kathy Prekoski, Lennin Bernal, and Haya Cuzick. Santa Paula Art Museum members who pay an annual membership fee receive a 10% discount on all art classes at the Cole Creativity Center by using the discount code MEMBER at checkout. Scholarships are available for certain youth classes.
The Santa Paula Art Museum is a participating member of Museums for All and offers free admission for EBT card holders and their family members, and the first Sunday of every month is free for all visitors. The Museum presents creative community events and Free Family Days, and the Cole Family has shown longstanding generosity toward the Museum. Dozens of community members donated their time and labor during the 2009 renovation of the Museum.
