Rhoten Productions Summer Camps
Challenge Sonoma Adventure Ropes Course, 476 1st Street E, Sonoma, CA 95476
About
Rhoten Productions Summer Camps offers Nature Camp and Performing Arts Camp, with activities that include hiking, exploring, swimming, performing arts, and learning about nature. All activities at the camps are “challenge by choice,” meaning each participant may choose not to take part in an activity if they feel uncomfortable. The camps focus on being outside and away from tech for the entire day, with multiple activity options available throughout the day instead of a rigid timetable.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
Rhoten Productions Summer Camps is led by Rhoten Productions, which was created by Diana Rhoten, who is also listed as the general contact and the camp emergencies contact. Rhoten Productions has been involved in children’s adventures and learning for over 30 years, with more than 30 years of creating experiences for children of Sonoma and beyond. The first session of Nature Camp began in 1987, and Performing Arts Camp is now over 25 years old.
The program’s philosophy is to allow children to experience the joys of being outside and away from tech for the entire day, with choices among different activities and without a rigid timetable. For Performing Arts Camp, the stated philosophy is to encourage participants to expand their possibilities by challenging themselves in a non-competitive environment. The camps are dedicated to creating a non-competitive environment so that everyone will feel comfortable trying something new, and their goal is to provide new and exciting experiences.
Many thanks from the program are given to Muriel VanHoosear, Patty Westerbeke, Marilyn Goode, and Joy Moulton for allowing Rhoten Productions to use their property for Nature Camp, and there is a Scholarship Program and Scholarship Fund that people can support through donations. Challenge Sonoma is noted as offering Open Days on the ropes course for ages 5 and up.
Parent comments about Rhoten Productions Summer Camps include reports that kids “have a blast, and come home tired,” and that Nature Camp includes “hiking, exploring, swimming and learning about nature (plus so much more).” Other parents describe Nature Camp as “a wonderful opportunity for kids to go and learn, explore and have fun,” and praise Diana Rhoten and the staff for the time, energy, and talent they put into the camp.
