About
The Sonoma School of Martial Arts offers classes in Taekwondo, Kumdo, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense, Chen Style Tai Chi, Rock Steady Boxing, Little Tigers, and a Competition Team. In sword training, students learn drawing and sheathing the sword, basic strikes, and forms, and then advance to combat training using Nerf swords and later wooden swords. In the Little Tigers program, students also practice with Nerf swords and Nerf nunchucks.

The Sonoma School of Martial Arts is a traditional martial arts school that follows the tenets of Taekwondo: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit, and practices in a respectful and welcoming environment where students of all levels and ages are welcome. The program offers kids, teens, and adults classes in Taekwondo, Kumdo, Hapkido, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and self-defense, and also follows traditional Olympic-style Taekwondo training that is officially recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation. Little Tigers introduces children as young as 4 to martial arts; during this program, kids are awarded five belts, starting with white, then yellow white, green white, and so on, and by the end of the course they transition to the older kids class having earned a yellow belt, knowing their first form, and having built foundations for continuing in martial arts. Competition Team students have placed first, second, and third multiple times in the Northern California Taekwondo Association (NCTA) Tournament Cup. The Sonoma School of Martial Arts is a member of the NCTA, which includes over 30 schools and 600 competitors.
The Rock Steady Boxing program at the school is specifically designed to address Parkinson’s symptoms such as slow or small movements, imbalance, stiffness, flexed posture, and respiratory weakness, and its scientifically based curriculum can be adapted to any level of Parkinson’s. Rock Steady Boxing is stated to change the trajectory of Parkinson’s disease.
The Sonoma School of Martial Arts offers a first class free to new students. The school’s grandmaster is Kwan-Sa-Nim Robert Morey, a 7th Degree Black Belt and student of Grand Master D.K. Shin, who founded the first Hwa Rang Kwan school on the West Coast in 1961; Master Morey founded Hwa Rang Kwan Napa in 2010 and Hwa Rang Kwan Sonoma in January 2021. Classes are taught by black belt Edward Aguilar and by Dr. Bob Bacher, who has been practicing and teaching tai chi, qigong, meditation, karate, and yoga since 1969, received the highest level training in Chen Family Village under Grandmaster Wang Xi’an, and is an internationally recognized 20th generation lineage teacher of the original Chen family tai chi. The Sonoma School of Martial Arts was voted “Best Martial Arts School in Sonoma County” in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
