About
Sonoma Valley Tennis Association Junior Tennis & Youth Programs offers tennis instruction through individual lessons, group lessons, and specialized clinics for kids, beginners, and experienced players. The program includes Junior Tennis, summer programs for youth, team matches, tournaments, and social play. SVTA also offers social events connected to its tennis activities.
USPTA Teaching Professional John Sutter, a USPTA Elite Professional and former ATP player ranked as high as 523 in the world, provides tennis instruction as an independent contractor on Court 1 at Maxwell Farms Regional Park Tennis and maintains current insurance and USTA Safe Play certification. SVTA was established in 1973 and entered into a long-standing partnership with Sonoma County and the Regional Parks Department in 1996. The Sonoma Valley Tennis Association promotes tennis for players of all ages and levels of experience and is a community organization dedicated to the promotion of tennis play within the Sonoma Valley. SVTA is a proud member of the national network of USTA Community Tennis Associations and sponsors USTA men and women's leagues, Sonoma-Napa-Marin Women's tennis teams, and Junior Tennis, and works with a teaching professional to offer tennis instruction. SVTA manages five courts at Maxwell Farms Regional Park, maintains and upgrades the courts and equipment, cleans the courts weekly, and raises all the funds to keep the courts in good playing condition. SVTA contracts with a teaching professional to provide individual and group lessons and clinics, hosts social events and tournaments, sponsors USTA and team matches, and connects players for social play. Scholarships and tennis equipment are available for kids who need assistance. The existing courts at Maxwell Farms were replaced with an advanced slip-sheet system technology that provides lasting durability and surface cushioning on certain courts. LED lights on all courts at Sonoma Valley High School allow evening play year-round from dusk until 10:00 pm, and Larson Park includes a rebound wall for practice. SVTA is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization. The 2026–2027 SVTA Board of Directors includes officers Kate McClintock (President), Judith Alex (Vice President), Mark Lyon (Secretary), and a TBD Treasurer, with board members Mia Rocca, Doug Lobsinger, Linda Zellerbach, and Greg Derochie, and a Maxwell Tennis Courts Facilities Committee consisting of Peter Coster, Judith Alex, Greg Derochie, and John Sutter.
