The Sonoma School of Martial Arts follows the tenets of Taekwondo: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit, and follows traditional Olympic-style Taekwondo training that is officially recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation. The Little Tigers program introduces children as young as 4 to martial arts, where they practice with nerf swords and nerf nunchucks and play games. In the Little Tigers program, kids are awarded 5 belts, starting with white, then yellow white, green white and so on, and by the end of the course they transition to the older kids class having earned a yellow belt and knowing their first form. The first class at this school is free.

The school’s grandmaster, Kwan-Sa-Nim Robert Morey, is a 7th Degree Black Belt and a student under Grand Master D.K. Shin, who founded the first Hwa Rang Kwan school on the West Coast in 1961 and is part of the leadership team. Master Morey founded Hwa Rang Kwan Napa in 2010 and Hwa Rang Kwan Sonoma in January 2021. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are taught by black belt Edward Aguilar. Chen Style Tai Chi classes are taught by Dr. Bob Bacher, who has been practicing and teaching tai chi, qigong, meditation, karate, and yoga since 1969, received the highest level training in Chen Family Village under the guidance of Grandmaster Wang Xi’an, and is an internationally recognized 20th generation lineage teacher of the original Chen family tai chi.

The Sonoma School of Martial Arts is a member of the Northern California Taekwondo Association (NCTA), which includes over 30 schools and 600 competitors. The school is planning to rebuild its competition team post-pandemic and plans to compete in NCTA events and other regional, state, and national events as students are willing and able to do so. The school also lists a blood drive on September 19 as part of its activities. The program was voted “Best Martial Arts School in Sonoma County” three years in a row in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Rock Steady Boxing at this school is specifically designed to address Parkinson’s symptoms such as slow or small movements, imbalance, stiffness, flexed posture, and respiratory weakness. The Rock Steady Boxing curriculum can be adapted to any level of Parkinson’s and changes the trajectory of Parkinson’s disease.
