Angelica Harris is the Founder and CEO of Top Tutors For Us. She attended Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), a top 25 university, on a full scholarship, graduated with degrees in finance and computer science, and completed her master’s in computer science at WashU. She created her own test prep system and raised her ACT Composite score from 16 to 32, and she earned a total of $1.5 million in college scholarships from a range of well-known colleges and universities. The program’s mission is to close the racial gap in standardized testing by connecting students with culturally competent tutors who strengthen academic skills, boost test scores, and maximize college admissions and scholarship opportunities. Top Tutors For Us offers culturally competent test prep for Black and Brown scholars, matches students with culturally relevant tutors, provides adaptive, tailored test-prep curriculums, and builds confidence and academic skills holistically. The program serves Black, Brown, and any high school students by connecting them with tutors who share their backgrounds and experiences, and it has a network of more than 300 tutors from elite colleges and universities. It is described as a turn-key tutoring solution for schools and as top-notch tutoring on auto-pilot for families, and it uses a culturally competent approach to test prep so that students reach their full potential.
Top Tutors For Us worked with United Way of Southeast Louisiana through the InspiredUp experience. TopTutorsForUs was recognized in Southern Startup News after earning third place in the inaugural New Voices NOLA POWER PITCH at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture. One testimonial from Renita W., Director of Education & Youth Initiatives at United Way of Southeast Louisiana, states that the addition of Top Tutors For Us strengthened the InspiredUp experience by providing students with academic support and college readiness resources, and that the results demonstrated what is possible when students are given tools and support. A student, Nai’rell W., shared that Top Tutors taught improvising skills when they did not know exactly what they were doing or looking for and allowed them to find ways to get around confusion and use other ways to figure things out. A parent, Portia W., reported that her son’s ACT scores improved to a 20 composite score (+3 points), with a 20 in English (+6 points), Math 19 (+4 points), and Science 23 (+5), and described Tops for Tutors as amazing.
