Cafeteria Kids Theater was founded in 2007 and has been part of Lunchtime Productions Inc., a non-profit tax exempt organization, since 2014. Its mission is to bring the performing arts to children and families in Napa Valley using theater as a vehicle to bridge different ethnicities, backgrounds, and perspectives, and to educate children to investigate the commonalities that exist in all people as they go through the creative process, which in turn builds inner confidence, imagination, and empathy. The mission also states that the goal is to give children of all ages tools to discover the artist within them and live in the world from a place of creativity, compassion, and love. The organization describes itself as “serving up drama to kids and teens in Napa Valley,” and staff have taught drama throughout Napa Valley in multiple local schools and theaters.
The leadership team includes Executive Director and Teacher Olivia Cowell, Musical Director and Teacher Vivian McLaughlin, In-School Residency Coordinator and Teaching Artist Tessa Mello, and Founder Aimée Guillot. Olivia Cowell is a theater educator, award-winning director, and choreographer with a master’s degree in Drama from San Francisco State University, and she has trained with the UK-based Royal Academy of Dance; she is a member of the California Educational Theatre Association (CETA), TYA/USA, the Royal Academy of Dance, and the American Alliance for Theatre & Education. Vivian McLaughlin has a BFA in Musical Theater from New York University, is a multiple Arty Award winner and nominee for her music direction, and is a member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA. Tessa Mello graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a BA in Theater and a concentration in Theater and Community, and she was raised in Napa all her life and works with Cafeteria Kids Theater to bring arts to this community.
