The Student Engagement and the Arts department coordinates many opportunities for students to compete, showcase, and participate in academic competitions countywide. San Joaquin County Honors Concerts feature choir, band, and orchestra performers from grades 6–12. The Artists-in-Schools program offers art classes to schools through the department’s teaching staff, and Color the Summer Arts Camp provides art education in an outdoor setting for 3rd–8th grade students. The San Joaquin County Office of Education describes Science Olympiad as a rigorous academic interscholastic competition for students, and Mock Trial involves high school teams debating fictitious cases before presiding judges and scoring attorneys.
The department is led by Erika Chapman, Director, and Dahlia Hood, Project Liaison. The San Joaquin County Office of Education states that its mission is to educate, innovate, and inspire in order to build a bright future for San Joaquin County. The San Joaquin County Honors Concerts are held in partnership with the San Joaquin County Music Educators Association. Events are supported in part by donations from the SJCOE Educational Foundation, which funds plaques and medals and helps pay to send winners of county competitions to state and national tournaments.
