Southern California Science Olympiad runs tournaments where students work together in teams of up to 15 to compete in 23 different science events. These tournaments function like academic track meets, with events that may involve taking written tests, doing hands-on labs, or building and bringing devices to the tournament. Events cover topics such as anatomy and biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, geology, mechanical and structural engineering, and technology.

Southern California Science Olympiad is a chapter of Science Olympiad and is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit. It reports involvement from over 6,500 students, 445 teams, 341 schools, and 10 counties. Teams and events are organized into three divisions: Division A for grades 4–6, Division B for grades 6–9, and Division C for grades 9–12, with Division A as the elementary division where events are specific to each tournament and teams work toward pre-defined requirement levels rather than competing against each other. Division B is the middle school division with events that are usually easier and less advanced than Division C, while Division C is the high school division with events that are usually harder and more advanced than Division B.
Each Science Olympiad season begins in September when the Event Rules are released and registration opens. Southern California Science Olympiad hosts, manages, or supports over 8 Invitational, 9 Regional, and 1 State Tournament in Southern California. Top teams from each Regional compete at the Southern California State Tournament in April for the title of State Champion and the chance to represent Southern California at the National Tournament in May. The Los Angeles Elementary Tournament has 51 teams competing and is described as one of the largest Elementary Science Olympiad events in the nation, and the 2026 Los Angeles Regional Elementary Tournament will take place on May 2, 2026.
Science Olympiad is described as an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. For the 2025–2026 season, Christie Pearce is listed as the Elementary Science Olympiad director, and Ryan Wong is noted as having prior leadership in Los Angeles.
Head coaches must submit release forms for all participants and a signed team roster to receive wristbands for competitors. Each student must fill out a release form that includes both a general release and a media release, and each team must complete one roster form and bring these forms on the day of the event. Each team is provided a trash bag and may request additional trash bags, and teams are asked not to set up on grass areas or directly next to certain buildings, and not to run extension cords or use open heating elements. Photography rules state that people may not enter closed competition areas, may not take photos of students who are not on their team, and may not photograph or record another team’s device without that team’s permission. Buses are not allowed into the team parking lot for drop-off or parking and must use designated drop-off and parking areas, and the Awards Ceremony is scheduled to take place on the track and field starting at 1:45 PM or as soon as all events have been scored.
