South Bay Children’s Choir focuses on singing and choral music, with music education that includes vocal technique, music theory, sight-reading, musicianship classes, and one-on-one vocal coaching. The program offers several progressive ensembles, including Songbirds, Music Makers, Lyric Voices, Encore Chorale, and Troubadours, all centered on choral training.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: Singers meet every Saturday morning from late August until early June; Songbirds meets 9:00–9:45 AM, Music Makers 9:00–11:00 AM, Lyric Voices 9:00–11:15 AM, and Encore Chorale 9:00–11:30 AM
• Price: Tuition is divided into six payments with available discounts; Songbirds is $179 per 10-week session, Music Makers is six payments of $125, Lyric Voices is six payments of $140, and Encore Chorale is six payments of $155, with 15% and 10% pay-in-full discounts and a $40 sibling discount
South Bay Children’s Choir began in 1996 as a comprehensive choral training program with six sequential levels of learning. The choir is led by Artistic Director Julie Corallo and Choir Manager Susan Benson, and was founded by the late Diane Simons and Dr. Jane Hardester. The ensembles are directed by Julie Corallo, Jake Asaro, Judith Chan, Kristie Toomath, Eloise Porter, and Bri Zucker, and the staff is described as experienced and highly qualified.
The organization states that it has been providing children in the South Bay with quality music education and emphasizes excellence while learning to work as a team in a nurturing environment. South Bay Children’s Choir is a proud member of El Camino College's Community & Continuing Education Department, and its singers come from more than 25 surrounding communities, including Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, the Palos Verdes peninsula, Hawthorne, San Pedro, Gardena, Carson, and Long Beach. Performance highlights include a Nutcracker performance with the Moscow Ballet, Carmina Burana with the Long Beach Symphony, Mass of the Children at Carnegie Hall, a Great American Folk Song Concert with two-time Grammy Award winner Cathy Fink, the Western Division American Choral Directors Association Convention, Arthur Honegger’s “Une Cantate Noël” with the Santa Monica Concert Orchestra, and an appearance on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with SBCC alum Rachel Bloom.
The choir has participated in international travel and festivals such as the International Children’s Choir Festival (singing under the baton of Henry Leck and David Flood at Canterbury Cathedral), the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans, and the Sing a Mile High Festival. Members have also taken part in the Music in the Parks Choir Festival at Knott’s Berry Farm, where the Choraliers, Concert Choir, and Bel Canto received a Superior Rating for their performance. South Bay Children’s Choir was featured in the Queen Mary’s “12 Days of Christmas” holiday celebrations and in the 64th Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, performing alongside 23 other ensembles from across Los Angeles County.
