Steve & Kate’s Camp was created in 1980. The camp’s stated mission is that, after a school year of rigid structure, summer at Steve & Kate’s gives kids freedom to expand and evolve, with campers choosing which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, as a kind of training ground for being empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The Torrance Summer Camp is hosted by St. James Catholic School, which is ADA-accessible. Local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures and other details are provided via a virtual camp orientation emailed to registered families, which also includes information on what to bring and not bring.
The camp also offers a Mentorship Program intended exclusively for children ages 14–15 at this camp location for Summer 2026. In this program, mentees help facilitate camp activities, engage with campers, and encourage camper connection and participation, using a self-directed learning model. Any unused Mentorship Day Passes are automatically refunded in full at summer’s end, and if fewer than 30 days are used on a Mentorship Summer Pass, the difference from the daily rate is automatically refunded.
Testimonials describe the camp as a place where “kids find their thumbprint,” and note that “if kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp,” as quoted by Apple’s Hot News. Variety magazine notes that many children of people working at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend, and The Washington Post describes Steve & Kate’s Camp as blending a traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-focused approach. The Chicago Tribune states that “working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
