About
Tustin Shaolin Martial Arts is a traditional Chinese Kung Fu school where students train in Shaolin Kung Fu, Praying Mantis (Tang Lang Chuan, or Praying Mantis Fist), and Tai Chi (Tai Chi Chuan – the Grand Ultimate Fist system). Classes also include Chin Na joint locking and pressure point techniques, Shuai Jiao throwing and grappling, weapons techniques, and a Kung Fu class that draws from multiple martial arts systems.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Friday in the evenings and Saturday mornings during school hours listed as Monday–Friday 5:00 PM–9:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Owner and Head Instructor Doug Autenrieth has a martial arts and military background spanning thirty years, including formal training in Tae Kwon Do, Ju Jitsu, and Kali (Philippine stick and knife fighting). In 2006, he competed in Taipei, Taiwan in the First World Cup Tai Chi Chuan Championship Tournament in both individual and group events and won First Place Overall awards in both. His experience also includes service as a US Marine Corps Infantry Officer and anti-terrorism Instructor, with training in hand-to-hand combat, anti-terrorism techniques, and weapons tactics with all branches of the U.S. Military and the FBI.
The school describes itself as a traditional Chinese Kung Fu school teaching Shaolin Kung Fu, Praying Mantis, and Tai Chi, with multiple martial arts systems that each have their own fighting techniques, history and traditions, and philosophy, all sharing a historical connection to the Shaolin system. The school states that its environment is the cornerstone of its instruction and that its classes, instructor-student relationships, and ethics are grounded in the values of Focus, Strength, Respect, and Patience. The Shaolin system is described as being like water, with fluid and flexible movement and consistent, relentless power that follows a path of least resistance; Praying Mantis Fist is styled after the physical appearance, movements, and attitude of the insect; and Tai Chi Chuan is described as an internal martial arts system that emphasizes proper breathing and visualization coordinated with physical movement to cultivate chi (energy).
The studio is described as a 1200 square foot space with a 1.5-inch thick foam mat covering most of the floor to allow a full range of realistic training techniques. One parent testimonial reports enrolling two children, ages 8 and 10, in the Kung Fu class and describes the student body as helpful and welcoming with a “family” environment. Other testimonials describe the training as traditional Shaolin Kung Fu and Tai Chi, note that the owner is friendly and answers questions, and state that the teacher pays attention to each student and provides individual guidance, with classes that can be challenging and rewarding.
