National Junior Basketball is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1984 and operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to inspire youth regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin; to practice the ideals of health, citizenship, and character; to implant the game elements of safety, sanity, and intelligent supervision; to keep the welfare of the player first and free of adult lust for glory; and to emphasize teamwork for all participants. The program’s philosophy emphasizes fundamentals, proper shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, good sportsmanship, teamwork, and equalizing team talent and size through a draft system called The Griffin method. National Junior Basketball provides training and rules clinics for game referees, as well as scheduling formats and procedures for chapters to follow during the regular season of competition.
The Rookie League is for K–1st grade and stresses fundamentals while providing tools for personal growth. The Divisional Play Program is open to all boys and girls in 2nd through 8th grade, while All-Net is described as the highest quality of play during the year. BYT leagues are for existing teams, including groups of friends or club teams looking for higher competition of play, and All-Net and BYT act as supplements to the Divisional Program and provide additional training to prepare players for high school basketball. The High School League is for players in grades 9–12 who did not make their high school team or who are looking for off-season play. The Stars Program has existed for over 20 years for players who want to play on a competitive club team in tournaments.
The Championship Series is described as the largest team tournament in the nation for NJB teams only and attracts over 900 teams. The winter league offers an All-Star Program for all the cities to compete for the championship, and the National All-Star Tournament ends the winter season with top teams competing for the NJB National Title. Over 1,000,000 participants have gone through National Junior Basketball programs.
National Junior Basketball lists Dennis Murphy, Jr. as the founder of the organization. A featured testimonial highlights Lake Forest NJB Head Coach Joel Neustaedter in the BYT League, noting that his team won the BYT end-of-season tournament and took silver at Nationals in Las Vegas, and describing him as an invaluable resource who leads by example and embodies the league’s core values of good sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork, and building character through the game of basketball.
