National Junior Basketball is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1984 by Dennis Murphy, Jr. It was founded in 1984 and has had over 1,000,000 participants go through its programs. NJB has grown into a national youth league with participants in four states: California, Hawaii, Arizona, and Nevada. The organization’s mission is to inspire youth regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin; to practice the ideals of health, citizenship, and character; to implant the game elements of safety, sanity, and intelligent supervision; to keep the welfare of the player first and free of adult lust for glory; and to emphasize teamwork for all participants.
NJB offers year-round basketball for grades K–12, including a Winter league that offers an All-Star Program for all the cities to compete for the championship. The Rookie League for K–1st grade stresses the fundamentals of the game and provides tools for personal growth. The Divisional Play Program is open to boys and girls in 2nd through 8th grade, while the High School League is for players in grades 9–12 who did not make their high school team or are looking for off-season play. The Griffin method draft system is used to help ensure that each team is equal in talent and size, and the program states that everyone is a winner at NJB.
The All-Net and BYT (Bring Your Team) programs act as a supplement to the Divisional Program and provide additional training to prepare players for high school basketball. BYT is a program for competitive teams in 2nd–8th grade, with separate Girls Divisions and Boys Divisions, and All-Net is a winter season program with higher-level competition for players getting ready for high school. The Championship Series is described as the largest team tournament in the nation for NJB teams only and attracts over 900 teams. Area All Stars and Sectional All-Star tournaments are held for girls and boys in the winter season, and the National All-Star Tournament ends the winter season with teams competing for the NJB National Title.
NJB provides skills workouts online and in person for boys and girls from kindergarten through high school. The Stars Program has existed for over 20 years for players who want to play on a competitive club team in tournaments. The organization also offers training and rules clinics for game referees and provides scheduling formats and procedures for chapters to follow during the regular season of competition.
