About
Santa Cruz NJB is a youth basketball program that focuses on basketball games and activities such as the Slam Dunk Tournament and Hot Shot Tournament. Players from Santa Cruz NJB also compete in events like the All-Star Championships, All-Star Regionals Championship, and All-Stars Tournament. The program plays its games within the Silicon Valley NJB Section.

NJB is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that exists to promote community through basketball. NJB has been California's largest youth basketball league for over 38 years, and the Santa Cruz chapter was established in 2022. The program lists a leadership team that includes Head Coach Sean Breidenthal, Assistant Coach Chris Carlock, Head Coach Chris Dougherty, Assistant Coach Nick Barrett, Coach Wes, Assistant Coach Brett, and Coach Isaiah.
Santa Cruz NJB states that everyone plays at NJB, and that when an athlete is registered, every player makes a team, pending coaching and registration numbers. The program seeks volunteers to coach boys and possibly girls teams, and also asks for volunteer time, talent, and expertise in a variety of areas.
NJB's 2024–2025 Division 1 Team (7th and 8th graders) took 1st place in the Regionals Slam Dunk Tournament, and this is the third year Division 1 has won the Regional Championship for NJB in Santa Cruz. NJB's 2024–2025 Division 2 Team (5th and 6th graders) took 1st place in the Regionals Hot Shot Tournament, which is the first year for Division 2 Regional Champions for NJB in Santa Cruz, and the Division 2 team made it to the All-Star Championships. NJB's 2023–2024 Division 1 Tropics Team (7th and 8th graders) took 1st place in Regionals, marking the second year of back-to-back Regional Champions for NJB in Santa Cruz; the Tropics Team was the only team going undefeated in Division 1, made it to the All-Star Championships, and took 2nd place in the All-Star Regionals Championship. NJB's 2022–2023 Division 1 Heat Team (7th and 8th graders) took 1st place in Regionals in the first year for NJB in Santa Cruz; the Heat Team was the only team in Division 1, made it to the All-Stars Tournament, and took 3rd place in the All-Stars Regional Championship.
Registration is closed for the Winter 2025–2026 season, and families who did not join for Winter 2025–2026 are directed to be on the lookout starting August 2026 for Winter 2026–2027 registration. The program’s website is powered by SportsEngine's Sports Relationship Management (SRM) software and is owned by and subject to the Santa Cruz NJB privacy policy.
