Steve & Kate’s Camp states that all year long kids are in rigid structure, and that in summer the camp gives them freedom to choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long. The camp describes this experience as a kind of training ground for life where kids are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. Steve & Kate’s Camp has operated with this approach since 1980.
The program notes that summer day camps are for kids aged 4–12, and that all campers must be fully toilet trained, able to speak up for their needs, and able to get through the camp day without a nap. Each camp has staff dedicated specifically to supporting the youngest campers, called Youngest Camper Support Staff. All-inclusive rates cover camp hours from 8:00am–6:00pm, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child, with no additional fees beyond the all-inclusive rates.
Families can buy any number of days and send their child to camp on any day they choose, with the option to drop off and pick up at any time during camp hours. Any unused purchased Day Passes are automatically refunded in full at summer’s end, and if a Summer Pass is used for fewer than 30 days, the camp calculates what would have been paid at the daily rate and refunds the difference automatically. No paperwork is required for age verification during registration, and registered families receive a link to a virtual camp orientation before summer with details on drop-off and pick-up procedures, daily check-in and check-out, and what to bring or not bring.
Steve & Kate’s Camp also offers a Mentorship Program intended exclusively for children ages 14–15, where mentees help facilitate camp activities, engage with campers, and help encourage camper connection and participation. The Mentorship Program uses self-directed learning, and any unused Mentorship Day Passes are automatically refunded in full at summer’s end; if a Mentorship Summer Pass is used for fewer than 30 days, the camp calculates what would have been paid at the daily rate and refunds the difference automatically.
The camp highlights weekly specials such as giant inflatables, musical performances, movement workshops, and popup petting zoos, and ends the season with a giant, end-of-summer celebration called Carnival that includes carnival games, extra treats, and chances to win prizes. The host school for this camp is The Country School, which is ADA-accessible, and families can learn more about the host school at www.country-school.org. The camp director is named Mickey.
Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at the camp “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s.” Apple’s Hot News states, “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that, given the camp’s philosophy, it is not surprising that many children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic attend. The Washington Post describes Steve & Kate’s Camp as a blend of traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-savvy touch, and the Chicago Tribune states that “working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
