About

Foothills Forest School offers activities such as trekking up big slopes, picking blackberries, identifying tracks, discovering bones, and observing the seasons change. Children at the program have jumped in the creek, sung songs, learned about Indigenous people, spotted birds, taken risks, yelled to the rooftops, and had hiking experiences. The program notes that children have made friends during their time there.

• Ages: 3–11 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–1:30pm

Foothills Forest School serves children ages 3–6 during the regular program year, and summer camps serve ages 3–11. Families can enroll for 1–5 days per week. The program describes Forest School as an educational approach that involves child-led, holistic learning in a 100% outdoor setting. The stated goal of the program is to nurture the whole child through hands-on learning while fostering a deep relationship with the natural world. The program notes that families who enroll their children in forest school value whole-child learning of the mind, body, and soul, and that the foundation for lifelong learning is nourished through rich experiences.

She has completed Forest School Leader Level 3 training and has been working with the CA Association of Forest Schools in helping to bring the program to fruition. Teacher Becca is a sociology major from SF State University and is currently pursuing her Masters of Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Teacher Joanne has a degree in psychology from the University of Washington.

One parent testimonial states that Rebecca has a “true gift with children,” describing how their highly emotional daughter came home talking about hikes, animals, the weather, and how things grow and evolve over time, and that the parent would trust Rebecca with their children “in almost any situation.” Another parent shares that their son “adores” Rebecca and that, through his hiking experiences with her, they have seen him grow in thoughtfulness, critical thinking, independence, and resilience. A third testimonial describes Rebecca as cultivating a nurturing and stimulating environment, notes that their son developed a connection and commitment to the natural world and his community, and mentions that Rebecca is reliable, communicative, and a “true partner” in their parenting journey.
