About
Tzu Chi Camps and Humanistic Education offers fun, interactive group activities along with English language instruction, humanistic culture classes, and academic courses such as vocabulary, grammar, reading, mathematics, Pre-Algebra, and reading and writing workshops. Participants take part in history tours, volunteer work, and various volunteer services, as well as hands-on activities at Tzu Chi’s Life Science Garden and activities that focus on conserving and protecting the Earth’s resources and recycling effectively.

• Schedule: Winter Camp runs for 11 days, with camp days scheduled on 12/23, 12/26–12/27, 12/30, 1/2–1/3, and 1/6–1/10 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with extended care available from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
The Humanistic Education Department plans and hosts Spring Camp, Summer Camp, Winter Camp, and International Summer Camp, and Tzu Chi Summer Camp includes a curriculum that covers academics, physical fitness, and various talents. The international summer camp brings in students from Tzu Chi schools in Taiwan to experience different cultures, and the program guides participants to become independent thinkers and compassionate leaders. The Tzu Chi Sprout Volunteer Program involves children in various volunteer services, and Tzu Chi Education Foundation is a President’s Volunteer Service Award-certified organization that can apply for this award for Tzu Chi Sprout volunteers who complete the required service hours. During a 12‑month period, volunteers ages 5–10 who complete at least 26 hours of service and volunteers ages 11–15 who complete at least 50 hours of service may apply to the Tzu Chi Education Foundation’s Humanities Office by January 15 each year with their volunteer service certificate and related documents.
The Tzu Chi Education Foundation states that its mission is to advance a global humanistic culture through education that balances developing the mind and opening the heart. Its character education program focuses on nurturing positive character traits and self-esteem, awakening the conscience, instilling environmental awareness, and supporting the development of interpersonal skills. The educational method combines small class size, strong teacher–student relationships, and real-world social interactions with Tzu Chi’s core missions of community service, charity work, disaster relief, and medical outreach.

The foundation’s Humanistic Education Department also operates four Great Love Preschools and one elementary school, serving a total of 412 students. Tzu Chi’s Life Science Garden is open to the public every Wednesday and Saturday, and its hands-on activities there are suitable for both children and adults. The Environmental Protection Education Center focuses on appreciating the natural world and the interconnectedness of all life.

Milestones include the opening of Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool and Kindergarten in Monrovia, California in 2006; the introduction of character education to a public school in San Bernardino in 2007; the establishment of a second Great Love Preschool and Kindergarten in Dallas, Texas in 2008; the opening of the first Tzu Chi elementary school in the United States in 2010; the first Tzu Chi Summer Camp USA in 2011; the opening of the third Great Love Preschool in Walnut, California in 2013; the fourth Great Love Preschool in Houston, Texas in 2014; the grand opening of Tzu Chi Education Campus in Walnut, California in 2014; and the opening of the second Tzu Chi Elementary School in Walnut, California in 2017. To complete enrollment for Summer Camp and Winter Camp, families fill out the forms and mail or drop off a payment check at the Buddhist Tzu Chi Education Foundation main office.
