In 1936, Eijiro Machida offered a gift of his land to build what became the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center, Inc. The center is home to over 25 cultural, educational, artistic, recreational and social programs serving over 1,000 families. Its mission is to foster and preserve the cultural heritage unique to Japanese American ancestry and to serve the community through social services, artistic, recreational, and educational programs. The ESGVJCC implements a 10 year strategic plan (2013-2023) with goals that include expansion to satellite facilities, generating profit from social enterprise, reducing membership fees, increasing programs and services, and creating a volunteer program. It functions as a Japanese American regional cultural and community organization spanning the greater Los Angeles County, the Inland Empire and Orange County. The leadership team includes Pearl Omiya, Executive Director; Tina Asano, Executive Assistant; Melissa Kozono, Program Director; Scott Kawachi, Office Manager; Mary Nagakawa, Marketing Coordinator; Bryce Middo, Events/Programs Coordinator; and Katrina Que, Events/Programs Coordinator. The ESGVJCC partners with the City of West Covina to host the annual City of West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival, the Sister City association of West Covina and Ohtawara, Japan, and the annual summer student exchange program between the two cities, and it collaborates with Japanese American organizations, civic officials, performing artists, campus clubs and educational institutions, including the annual community Health Fair with California State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez.
