About
East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center Youth Programs take place in the gym and social hall and are part of a larger set of cultural, educational, artistic, recreational, and social programs. The programs are offered by a not for profit organization that serves families through these types of activities.
The East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center Youth Programs are part of an organization whose history traces back to 1936, when Eijiro Machida offered his land to build what became the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center. The organization’s mission is to foster and preserve the cultural heritage unique to Japanese American ancestry and to serve the community through social services, artistic, recreational, and educational programs. It is home to over 25 cultural, educational, artistic, recreational, and social programs that serve over 1,000 families and operates under a 10-year strategic plan from 2013 to 2023 that includes goals such as expansion to satellite facilities, generating profit from social enterprise, reducing membership fees, increasing programs and services, and creating a volunteer program. The leadership team includes Executive Director Pearl Omiya, Executive Assistant Tina Asano, Program Director Melissa Kozono, Office Manager Scott Kawachi, Marketing Coordinator Mary Nagakawa, and Events/Programs Coordinators Bryce Middo and Victoria Castellanos. The organization partners with the City of West Covina to host the annual City of West Covina Cherry Blossom Festival, works with the Sister City association of West Covina and Ohtawara, Japan, and supports an annual summer student exchange program between the two cities. It also collaborates with Japanese American organizations, civic officials, performing artists, campus clubs, and educational institutions, including an annual community Health Fair with California State Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez.
