About

Academy of Music for the Blind offers instruction in music and performing arts, including piano, percussion, guitar, wind instruments, voice, dance, and drama. Students can also study literary and music Braille, composition, computer recording, computer typing, living skills, music history, music technology, songwriting, chorus, and synthesis. Teachers deliver specialized, adaptive instruction tailored to the needs of blind students.

AMB’s mission is to address the unique talents and challenges of blind youth by developing their musical, creative, cognitive, physical and social skills through education in music and the performing arts. AMB specifically addresses the educational, social, and physical needs of musically gifted blind youth and is described as a ground-breaking institute of education for blind music students. For 20 years, AMB has offered the only year-round comprehensive music and performing arts education for the blind, and its in-person facility in Whittier, California serves students in the Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and Valley communities, while its online program serves youth outside the Greater Los Angeles area.

AMB teachers are selected based on qualifications that include currently performing as professional musicians, playing by ear and improvising, holding formal music qualifications, inspiring students with innovative teaching methods, and enjoying working with children and fostering their musical growth. All of the teachers are professional musicians with college degrees, and many are graduates of institutions such as Berklee College of Music, CalArts, and USC. The leadership team includes David Pinto (Executive Director, Founder and Board Member), Gayle Pinto (Program Administrator, Co-Founder), Layne Beamer (Chairman of the Board), Ken Sitzwohl (Treasurer & Investment Committee), Deb Beyer (Faculty Relations), Joe Joffrion (Legal Advisor), Tracey Riddle (Social Media), and Maurice Meysenburg (Public Relations).
