The Southern California Philharmonic Young Artists Solo Competition / Young Artist Program includes the Young Artists Solo Competition, the Young Artist Program, and youth mentorship, music education, and outreach programs connected to live performances of orchestral masterworks. Winners of the Young Artists Solo Competition perform with the Southern California Philharmonic in three spring concerts, including events such as the Young Artists Showcase No. 3 concert, which features winners in the Piano Category performing movements from Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, and Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, along with Stravinsky's Firebird Suite (1919). The Young Artists Solo Competition attracts many talented students ranging from 5 to 23 years of age, and winners are awarded a modest scholarship to help them continue their studies.

The Young Artists Solo Competition has been held for over twenty years and continues to be a mainstay for the Southern California Philharmonic. In the 2024–2025 concert season, the orchestra staged 10 orchestral concerts, each offered with free admission or on a donate-what-you-can basis, and welcomed an average of 150–300 patrons per concert cycle. In that same season, $4,200 in scholarships were awarded to the 21st annual cohort of Young Artists, and the ensemble included students as young as 13 performing alongside lifelong musicians in their 90s.
The Southern California Philharmonic is a volunteer community-based symphony orchestra rooted in Orange County, California, supported by corporate and individual sponsors. It presents low- to no-cost opportunities for public engagement with the symphonic arts and brings music education and outreach to audiences across the region. The orchestra has partnered with the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts and the Colburn Foundation to present a special performance at the Nixon Presidential Library.
The mission of the Southern California Philharmonic is to promote a culturally rich and connected community by staging live performances of orchestral masterworks for the public and by advancing educational opportunities for future generations of musicians and leaders. The organization’s vision is guided by a Board of Directors, and musical director and conductor Branden Muresan, referred to as Maestro Branden Muresan, leads the orchestra and is described as a recipient of numerous awards.
