About

Able Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding is a program operated by Family SOUP that offers therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-assisted activities. Participants take part in activities such as sidewalking, leading horses, and grooming horses. The program focuses on both therapeutic riding skills and the development of a relationship between horse and rider, using a team approach with the guidance of a riding instructor.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Sessions take place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with 45-minute sessions beginning at 4:00 p.m., and a 3:00 p.m. session planned.
• Price: Adaptive Riding Evaluations are $67.16*, and 60-minute Adaptive Riding Sessions are $65.52*. *Limited scholarships are available.

Able Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding is the only therapy horseback riding program in the Sutter, Yuba, and Colusa county area and uses horses and equine-assisted activities to address physical, emotional, social, cognitive, behavioral, and educational skills for people who have disabilities. Horses in this program provide neuromuscular stimulation through rhythmic motion that mimics human walking. The American Physical Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association recognize the therapeutic qualities of horseback riding.

The program does not currently have any openings and uses a waitlist. Able Riders recruits responsible volunteers over the age of 15, and while horse experience is desired for volunteers, it is not required, and training is offered for new volunteers.

The Family SOUP mission is to empower families of children with special needs through support and education to reach their full potential as members of the community. Scholarships for Able Riders are made possible through outside funding sources including the Leg Up for Able Riders fundraiser, the Family SOUP annual campaign, the Family SOUP annual fundraising event, Alta California Regional Center, Families for Children, and private donations from local donors and businesses. Families can contact the Able Riders line at (530) 751-1925 ext. 106 for Deneen or email [email protected], and can also email Amber Soto at [email protected].
