About

Able Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding offers therapeutic horseback riding and other equine-assisted activities. Participants may take part in sidewalking, leading horses, and grooming horses as part of the program. Therapeutic horseback riding in this program uses a team approach with the guidance of a riding instructor, and horses provide neuromuscular stimulation through their movement that mimics the human movement of walking.

Able Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding is a program operated by Family SOUP. The Family SOUP mission is to empower families of children with special needs through support and education to reach their full potential as members of the community. The American Physical Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association recognize the therapeutic qualities of horseback riding. Scholarships for Able Riders are funded through sources including the Able Riders Leg Up for Able Riders fundraiser, the Family SOUP annual campaign, the Family SOUP annual fundraising event, Alta California Regional Center, Families for Children, and private donations from local donors and businesses. One testimonial describes a child who became so active that his mother said she had to run after him, and another describes a young man who learned to read in middle school after being motivated to read about horses and later earned a high school diploma. Able Riders is the only therapy horseback riding program in the Sutter, Yuba, and Colusa county area. The program currently has no openings and uses a waitlist, and it seeks responsible volunteers over the age of 15 and provides training for new volunteers.
