About
Go West Camps offers activities such as biking, hiking, swimming, camping, paddle boarding, and rock climbing. Campers also take part in gardening and maintaining a food garden, farm and garden projects, art, drama, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, team building initiatives, relay races, camp songs, and board games.
• Schedule: Camp day runs Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, in three-week sessions (Session 1: June 1–June 19; Session 2: June 22–July 10; Session 3: July 13–July 31)
Go West Camps is accredited by the American Camp Association and is licensed as a school aged child care program by the Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Childcare. The camp maintains a 1:6 staff to camper ratio and uses a Skill Track philosophy for out of school time. Staff members complete training before summer, attend in-service trainings, are evaluated throughout the summer, and receive at least First Aid, CPR, and certifications in specific program activities, and they undergo state and federal criminal background checks.
Go West Camps is family owned and operated, with leadership including Owners/Directors Andrew VanDerWege and Arianne VanDerWege, Senior Director Kaylin Larkin, Camp Nurse Supervisor Kaitel Burch, Director of Operations Courtney Sabo, Basecamp Program Director Mel Leider, Assistant Site Director Mycah Quevillion, Unit Leaders Jackline Ballang, Mae Greiner, and Sage Sharp, Senior Counselor Asha Mayott, Paddle Board Instructor Briana Manguette, Farm and Garden Instructor Natalie Galindo, and Rock Climbing Instructor Amber Stratton. Kaitel Burch received her BSN from the University of Colorado, and Kaylin Larkin received a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Colorado.
According to its mission statement, Go West Camps focuses on exploring the local area, using summer sunshine, physical activity, fresh food, and activities that encourage exploration and innovation, and on creating a community that supports skill development as kids grow. The program emphasizes human powered transportation by foot and bike, maintaining a food garden and learning healthy gardening practices, and exploration and innovation. Go West partners with The Colorado Springs School to provide Out of School Time programs and serves as a site for summer day camp programs, and it highlights being part of a supportive and encouraging community of kids and adults with a sense of belonging and responsibility to serve as a good citizen.
