About

Campers practice learning and applying Leave No Trace principles, observing and identifying useful plants, identifying scat, finding food and medicine in the wild, and fashioning utensils and shelter from gathered materials. The program also includes flintknapping, paddling a canoe, water safety, using canoeing equipment, reading terrain to find water, and purifying water.

Survival Skills Day Camp is taught by experienced Avid4 Adventure instructors who are all 18 and older with safety and skills training, and who have extensive experience in youth development, outdoor education, and operations. The team is led by founder David Secunda, former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Campers are grouped by grade range, with 2nd–4th graders and 5th–7th graders receiving customized instruction, and no previous survival or outdoor experience is required. The program includes transportation to and from recreation areas and access to top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids. Every activity starts with a discussion about risks, prevention, and response, and the camp focuses on calculated, well-communicated risks. The camp is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which promises an authentic outdoor adventure, professional staff, and increased confidence, and if these stated promises are not met, the next Avid4 Adventure camp is free for the family. Avid4 Adventure states that it runs top-notch, highly acclaimed summer camps, offers programs that evolve from age 3 to 17, and is committed to paying educators a fair wage. The organization operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service, is accredited by the American Camp Association, is a Certified B Corp, and has been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps. Discounts include a Multi-Session/Sibling discount of $25 off per session after the first, a referral program that gives friends $50 off their first camp and a $50 coupon for referrers for a future 2026 camp after purchase, and a Service Discount of $65 off for qualifying professions. Testimonials from parents in September 2023 describe children learning new outdoor skills, being active every day, and wanting to return to camp.
