About
DCPA Theatre for Young Audiences presents stories on stage that include acting, improv, movement, and other theatre-based activities. The program includes quarterly classes in acting, improv, movement, and more for students with different experience levels, from novices to seasoned professionals. Book Stars is one of the offerings and encourages Pre-K and Kindergarten students to use their bodies, voices, and imaginations to explore classic and soon-to-be classic children’s stories.
• Ages: 4–9 years old
Since 2016, DCPA Theatre for Young Audiences has welcomed tens of thousands of Pre-K through third grade students to experience live theatre. The program features stories that range from classic favorites to reimagined tales and new found characters and is designed to introduce young children to live theatre. Since its inception, the program has welcomed up to 40,000 children every fall for Theatre for Young Audiences productions. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is the nonprofit organization behind these productions, as well as Broadway tours, locally produced Theatre Company shows, cabaret performances, statewide education programs, and events. The program is led in part by Allison Watrous, Executive Director of Education & Community Engagement. The Group Sales department works with schools and group leaders to bring local students to a curated selection of shows year-round at discounted rates. One testimonial from Allison Watrous states that arts education and experiencing live theatre allows children to connect their experiences to stories on stage designed to engage their imagination, critical thinking, and socio-emotional intelligence, and that they are thrilled to welcome students and families to Theatre for Young Audiences performances.
