Since 2016, DCPA Theatre for Young Audiences has welcomed tens of thousands of Pre-K through third grade students to experience live theatre, and since its inception has welcomed up to 40,000 children every fall for Theatre for Young Audiences productions. Acting classes are designed for Pre-K to adult students and are available for novices and seasoned professionals. The Group Sales department works with schools and group leaders to bring local students to a curated selection of shows year-round at discounted rates, and Student Matinees bring local students to a curated selection of shows year-round at discounted rates. Buses regularly drop students off along Arapahoe Street for Theatre for Young Audiences shows, and cars often park across the street in the Arts Complex garage with entrances off of both Arapahoe and 13th Street. The program is led by Allison Watrous, Executive Director of Education & Community Engagement. The program is designed to introduce young children to live theatre with stories that range from classic favorites to reimagined tales and new found characters and invite young audiences to experience theatre for the first time. One testimonial notes that arts education and experiencing live theatre allows children to connect their experiences to stories on stage designed to engage their imagination, critical thinking, and socio-emotional intelligence, and that the organization is thrilled to welcome students and families to its Theatre for Young Audiences performances.
